TL;DR: This study looks at the contemporary research in chitin and chitosan towards applications in various industrial and biomedical fields.
Abstract: Chitin and chitosan are considerably versatile and promising biomaterials. The deacetylated chitin derivative, chitosan is more useful and interesting bioactive polymer. Despite its biodegradability, it has many reactive amino side groups, which offer possibilities of chemical modifications, formation of a large variety of useful derivatives that are commercially available or can be made available via graft reactions and ionic interactions. This study looks at the contemporary research in chitin and chitosan towards applications in various industrial and biomedical fields.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide a review of the use of pre-treatment for hemicellulose in a lignocellulose feedstock-based biorefinery.
Abstract: Biomass pretreatment (BP) plays a crucial role in a lignocellulose feedstock-based biorefinery (LCFBR) for processing of three major output streams (cellulose, hemicelluloses and lignin) into chemicals and biofuels. BP includes processing of lignocellulosic material (LCM) under aqueous, dilute acid or alkaline media to obtain a cellulosic fraction, which is then fermented to produce bioethanol. Hemicellulose is usually treated as a secondary stream due to lack of efficient fermentation of hemicellulosic sugars to ethanol. This review provides BPs assuming that hemicellulose stream should be integrated in LCFBR as a primary fraction for converting into value-added compounds other than bioethanol. Different LCM treatments are analyzed foreseeing bio-based products possible to obtain from hemicellulose path.

TL;DR: The review discusses the current knowledge on cellulase production by microorganisms and the genetic controls exercised on it and the challenges in cellulase research especially in the direction of improving the process economics of enzyme production.
Abstract: Microbial cellulases find applications in various industries and constitute a major group of the industrial enzymes. Recently, there is resurgence in utilization of biomass for fuel production employing cellulases and hence forth in obtaining better yields and novel activities. Improving the economics of such processes will involve cost reduction in cellulase production which may be achieved by better bioprocesses and genetic improvement of cellulase producers to yield more of the enzyme. The review discusses the current knowledge on cellulase production by microorganisms and the genetic controls exercised on it. It discusses the industrial applications of cellulases and the challenges in cellulase research especially in the direction of improving the process economics of enzyme production.

TL;DR: Banana serves as an ideal and low cost food source for developing countries where most of the population rely mostly on bananas for food as discussed by the authors and is useful as insecticide, antioxidant, color absorber, in preparation of various functional foods, wine, alcohol, biogas, cattle feed etc.
Abstract: Banana serves as an ideal and low cost food source for developing countries where most of the population rely mostly on bananas for food. Banana plant parts are useful as insecticide, antioxidant, colour absorber, in preparation of various functional foods, wine, alcohol, biogas, cattle feed etc. This review discusses usefulness of banana fruits, peel, leaves, pseudostem, sheath, pith and male bud, and prospects of using these materials in industry.
