TL;DR: In this paper, a survey was conducted of second-year social welfare master's students to investigate educational needs, and the findings illustrate the need for incorporating AIDS information in social work education and highlight the central role of curricula in professional preparation.
Abstract: Social workers in a variety of fields have been called upon to respond to AIDS, one of the most pressing public health problems confronting our country Yet few materials describe how social work students are being prepared to handle AIDS-related issues To investigate educational needs, a survey was conducted of second-year social welfare master's students Knowledge scores were variable, while attitude measures suggest the success of social work education in socializing students to the values of the profession The findings illustrate the need for incorporating AIDS information in social work education and highlight the central role of curricula in professional preparation

TL;DR: This paper presented the concept of goal-oriented contract field instruction as a means for providing direction in and measurement of student learning in the field and discussed the basic assumptions for contracting and the role of goals in learning, with an illustrative example from both a clinical and an administrative setting.
Abstract: This paper presents the concept of goal-oriented contract field instruction as a means for providing direction in and measurement of student learning in the field. After discussing the basic assumptions for contracting and the role of goals in learning, the paper presents an outline for the field instruction contract, with an illustrative example from both a clinical and an administrative setting. It concludes with an examination of the advantages and drawbacks of goal-oriented contracting in field instruction.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe how a task-centered practice model can be applied to work with the homeless to illumniate the nature of generalist practice and discuss possible examples from this population in the teaching of policy and research.
Abstract: The characteristics and needs of homeless people, combined with the difficulties of designing and delivering accessible and effective services to members of this population, serve as a rich source of examples and applications for teaching generalist social work practice. Meeting the needs of homeless clients requires skills in advocacy, community coalition building, brokering services, and the development, coordination, and evaluation of service programs. The authors describe how a task-centered practice model can be applied to work with the homeless to illumniate the nature of generalist practice. In addition, this paper includes a discussion of possible examples from this population in the teaching of policy and research.

TL;DR: In this paper, it is suggested that some restructuring and re-alignment of teaching responsibility might be necessary in order to cope with the pressures of current practice in social work education.
Abstract: The changes in faculty profile in schools of social work, and the excessive demands upon social work settings have created a new problem in social work education. It is suggested that some restructuring and re-alignment of teaching responsibility might be necessary in order to cope with the pressures of current practice.

TL;DR: In this article, the need for training Southeast Asian paraprofessional social workers is addressed, and the authors focus on mutuality in learning between educators and students, and on the influence of culture and individiual life experiences which may enhance or impede the learning process.
Abstract: This paper addresses the need for training Southeast Asian paraprofessional social workers. The theoretical and empirical literature on the social service needs of this group report that under-utilization and premature termination of services is common for this population. Further, all evidence points to the fact that Southeast Asians respond more readily to indigenous workers, who are knowledgeable about the cultural differences in service delivery between Eastern and Western cultures. Emphasis is placed on mutuality in learning between educators and students, and on the influence of culture and individiual life experiences which may enhance or impede the learning process. Knowledge of the culture is an essential ingredient for teaching effectiveness, and examples of specific teaching and learning issues relevant to cultural and migration experiences are reviewed.

TL;DR: The authors presented a middle-range conceptualization which works both deductively from the conceptual models and inductively from practice experiences, making use of three dimensions: levels of intervention, phases of the problem-solving model, and components involved in each step of the intervention.
Abstract: Social work has a number of broad conceptual models, but the difficulty lies in translating them into concrete categories that reflect the student's or practitioner's experience in the field. This paper presents a middle-range conceptualization which works both deductively from the conceptual models and inductively from practice experiences. The conceptual frame is made up of three dimensions: (a) levels of intervention; (b) phases of the problem-solving model; and (c) components involved in each step of the intervention. In each cell of the framework one can specify relevant practice activities. The topic of engagement is discussed as an example of how the model works. Finally, the paper describes how this middle-level conceptualization can be taught to graduate school students.

TL;DR: The authors argued that the all-social welfare-policy-is-reational approach will more likely lead to an understanding of why a policy was adopted and successful efforts to influence future policies.
Abstract: Are we teaching our students an approach to social welfare policy that is dysfunctional to the profession's goal of influencing public policy? Some social welfare policy authors contend that all social welfare policy is irrational. The author of this paper contends that we might be better off assuming that all social welfare policy is rational. It is argued that the all-social-welfare-policy-is-reational approach will more likely lead to (1) an understanding of why a policy was adopted and (2) successful efforts to influence future policies.
