Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that teaching some research methods as practice skills could increase student receptivity to research, which could contribute to the dearth of research by practicing social workers and anxiety social work students feel about learning and conducting research.
Abstract: A long-standing disconnect between social work practice and research exists that begins with our current education model. When taught separately, students often think they are distinctly different areas of social work that do not have to coexist. This conceptualization of research and practice as separate could contribute to the dearth of research by practicing social workers and the anxiety social work students feel about learning and conducting research. However, the practice skills of engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation are similarly used in many research methods. This paper postulates that teaching some research methods as practice skills could increase student receptivity to research.

TL;DR: The findings of a 2-day public health social work (PHSW) summit that brought together educators, practitioners, and administrators to generate ideas for preparing the next generation of PHSW leaders are reported in this article.
Abstract: This article reports the findings of a 2-day public health social work (PHSW) summit that brought together PHSW educators, practitioners, and administrators to generate ideas for preparing the next generation of PHSW leaders. Data from focus groups revealed four themes: the importance of PHSW in our healthcare delivery system, the need for public health social workers to develop their professional identity, the significance of branding/promoting PHSW, and the favorable consequences of infusing PHSW content into social work curricula. Attendees generated ideas for bringing PHSW forward and provided recommendations to accrediting bodies for highlighting the importance of PHSW.

TL;DR: Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a relatively brief psychodynamic intervention of approximately 12 sessions focusing on how current interpersonal relationships have contributed to a person's mental health symptoms.
Abstract: Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a relatively brief psychodynamic intervention of approximately 12 sessions focusing on how current interpersonal relationships have contributed to a person’s mental health symptoms. Areas targeted for work involve significant role transitions, grief and loss, and interpersonal disputes. IPT is an evidence-based treatment for depression, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorders. Despite these advantages, social work students rarely receive instruction on the delivery of IPT in their graduate programs. The purpose of this project, therefore, was to begin to address this gap by implementing an IPT component in a clinical practice course and testing student knowledge pre- and post-test. An example of sample assignments involving application of IPT to student fieldwork is provided. The sample in this study involved a small number of students enrolled in a clinical course taught in the first semester of the second year of training. Students improved their knowledg...
