TL;DR: Overhead power lines at construction sites can be dangerous for the workers, especially when equipment such as cranes, cherry pickers, and high lifts are used.
Abstract: ©2017, CPWR-The Center for Construction Research and Training. All rights reserved. CPWR is the research and training arm of NABTU. Production of this document was supported by cooperative agreement OH 009762 from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of NIOSH. Overhead power lines at construction sites can be dangerous for the workers, especially when equipment such as cranes, cherry pickers, and high lifts are used. Contact with overhead power lines can result in serious injury and even death.

TL;DR: In the Dragon as discussed by the authors, the fuel-element-handling machine is built into the primary-coolant circuit and the mechanism must be protected by clutches set to slip at given torques, and the operational requirements have led to the choice of the hysteresistype clutch.
Abstract: In the Dragon reactor, the fuel-element-handling machine is built into the primarycoolant circuit. The mechanism must be protected by clutches set to slip at given torques, and the operational requirements have led to the choice of the hysteresistype clutch. TL;DR: In this paper, a small positive voltage is applied to the gate lead sufficiently to forward bias the cathode junction, and the device will immediately turn fully on, in keeping with the behavior of the basic four-layer diode.
Abstract: However, if we now apply a small positive voltage to the gate lead sufficiently to forward bias the cathode junction, the device will immediately turn fully on. Again, this is in keeping with the behavior of the basic four-layer diode. The difference is that we can accurately control the timing and the applied gate voltage, if necessary. Thus, we can determine the conditions under which the SCR will fire more accurately than we can for the basic four-layer diode.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the existence of ball lightning has been investigated in the fields of thermonuclear power production, crystal growing, and pulsed-light communication, with potential applications in the field of crystal growing and communication.
Abstract: As with unidentified flying objects, the origins as well as the existence of ball lightning have, in the past, been extremely controversial, with some authorities insisting that such a phenomenon did not exist. However, not only has recent work corroborated the existence of ball lightning, but many data, both analytical and experimental, have been produced. Potential applications may lie in the fields of thermonuclear power production, crystal growing, and pulsed-light communication. The author is with the Bendix Corporation, in the United States.

TL;DR: In this article, the importance of sheet flatness is emphasized, and well oriented material is desirable, and two laboratory methods of producing a low-magnetostriction material are discussed.
Abstract: In practice, the noise output of a transformer core is due mainly to magnetostriction. Compressive stresses in core sheets need to be avoided. The importance of sheet flatness is emphasized, and well oriented material is desirable. Two laboratory methods of producing a low-magnetostriction material are discussed.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a family of professionals who develop, prepare and or review engineering plans and designs for structures, facilities and/or systems, and provide technical assistance to consulting engineers, contractors, public officials, municipalities and industry.
Abstract: The functions performed by employees in this job family will vary by level, but may include the following: Develops, prepares and/or reviews engineering plans and designs for structures, facilities and/or systems. Develops, prepares and reviews reports and studies to identify and recommend engineering solutions. Performs engineering inspections of systems operations and of structures and facilities during construction. Interprets, develops and implements statutes and regulations. Reviews applications and issues permits. Performs physical and chemical tests to assure the quality of construction and facility operations and ambient conditions. Reviews engineering program activities to make recommendations for changes in policy and procedures. Conducts engineering research and provides technical assistance to consulting engineers, contractors, public officials, municipalities and industry.

Abstract: In 1957, as a result of extensive inquiries after missing notes and manuscripts, three sackfuls of papers were found under the floorboards of Heaviside's house in Paignton, Devon. An article on this discovery appeared in the January 1959 Journal, p. 26, and an Institution Monograph (319) on the papers was published at the same time.

TL;DR: The ultra-sound image camera as discussed by the authors enables a visible image to be reproduced of the ultra sound intensity distribution on the camera face, which is complementary to X-ray and to ultrasonic pulse-echo inspection methods.
Abstract: The ultra-sound image camera enables a visible image to be reproduced of the ultra-sound intensity distribution on the camera face. Coupled with acoustic lenses, and immersed in a suitable medium, the internal structure of substances or objects transparent to ultrasonic waves can be studied with the instrument. In its uses it is complementary to X-ray and to ultrasonic pulse-echo inspection methods. It has applications to the non-destructive testing of materials and engineering components, and also to medical diagnosis. An ultra-sound camera tube and complete viewing equipment have been built. The sensitivity for unity signal/noise ratio is 10−7 W/cm2 at the camera face, and the resolution is 0.5 mm at 4 Mc/s. It is one of several possible types of ultra-sound camera. The design is discussed, and directions into which further research and development might be taken are also considered.
