TL;DR: This comprehensive review by leading experts in their respective fields should be of great value to all physicians concerned with diagnosis and treatment of ulcerative and granulomatous colitis.
Abstract: This needed and well-written book deals with the pathology, radiology, clinical picture and surgery of ulcerative and granulomatous colitis. Each section was written by an authority in the field. No similar treatise is available on the same subject. The approach throughout is comprehensive and yet practical, reflecting extensive personal experience, research, and thoughtful analysis. Also of interest is a historical review of the medical history of ulcerative colitis and its relatively recent differentiation from granulomatous colitis. The book is profusely illustrated, with the radiologic chapter approaching atlas format. The volume contains excellent tables and drawings. The quality of the radiographic reproductions is average. New material is presented in the extensive review chapter of surgery. It comprises about one-third of the book. It covers the subject completely with sections on indications, choice of operation, preoperative preparation and postoperative care, results of surgery, and long-term complications. The section on long-term management of the patient with an ileostomy was written together with H. Honesty. The literature review is extensive in almost all chapters and as recent as 1971. Less attention is given to the more recent literature concerning the overlapping spectrum of radiologic signs in the two diseases and some of the limitations of the differential diagnosis in histopathologic analysis and gross findings.
