Abstract: Ground vibration is an integral part of the rock blasting process in surface mines, which may cause severe damages to structures and plants in the nearby environment. Therefore, its prediction plays an important role in the minimization of environmental impacts. The peak particle velocity (PPV) is an important predictor for ground vibration. In this paper, first a fuzzy logic model was developed to predict PPV based on collected data from blasting events in Sarcheshmeh copper mine, located in the southwest of Iran. The predictive fuzzy model was implemented on the fuzzy logic toolbox of MATLAB using the Mamdani algorithm. Then, the PPV was predicted by conventional empirical predictors used in blasting practice and also by multiple regression analysis. Finally, a comparative analysis between the results obtained by the fuzzy model and common vibration predictors was carried out. Abstract: In this paper an effective method has been proposed for designing optimal multiple tuned mass dampers (MTMDs) to mitigate the seismic response of structures based on defining an optimization problem which considers the parameters of tuned mass dampers (TMDs) as variables and minimization of maximum structural response as an objective function while a number of constraints have been applied on TMDs response and parameters. The genetic algorithm (GA) has been used successfully for solving the optimization problem. For illustration, for a ten-story linear shear frame subjected to a filtered white noise excitation optimal MTMDs have been designed. The results have shown the simplicity and convergence behavior of the method. It has also been concluded that the performance of MTMDs depends on TMDs mass ratio, TMDs configuration and design criteria where increasing the TMDs mass ratio has improved monotonously the performance of MTMDs especially for the domain of smaller values of the mass ratio, while for this ...

Abstract: In this paper, we present a method for solving multi-dimensional fractional optimal control problems. Firstly, we derive the Bernstein polynomials operational matrix for the fractional derivative in the Caputo sense, which has not been done before. The main characteristic behind the approach using this technique is that it reduces the problems to those of solving a system of algebraic equations, thus greatly simplifying the problem. The results obtained are in good agreement with the existing ones in the open literature and it is shown that the solutions converge as the number of approximating terms increases, and the solutions approach to classical solutions as the order of the fractional derivatives approach 1.

Abstract: Monitoring of incipient faults is vital for the safe and reliable operation of rolling element bearings. In this paper, the combination of discrete wavelet transform and envelope analysis is proposed to extract the characteristic spectrum of rolling bearing vibration data. Then spectrum cross-correlation coefficient is applied to identify different operating conditions of rolling bearings. The proposed method is applied to fault diagnosis of rolling bearings with several different faults. The results show that the proposed method has high classification accuracy, and performs better than alternative approaches based on conventional characteristic defect frequency extraction. Abstract: A variational method is proposed to study the free vibration of joined cylindrical-conical shells (JCCSs) subjected to classical and non-classical boundary conditions. A JCCS is divided into its components (i.e., conical and cylindrical shells) at the cone-cylinder junction. The interface continuity and geometric boundary conditions are approximately enforced by means of a modified variational principle and least-squares weighted residual method. No constraints need to be imposed a priori in the admissible displacement functions for each shell component. Reissner-Naghdi's thin shell theory is used to formulate the theoretical model. Double mixed series, i.e. the Fourier series and Chebyshev orthogonal polynomials, are adopted as admissible displacement functions for each shell component. To test the convergence, efficiency and accuracy of the present method, free vibrations of JCCSs are examined under various combinations of edge support conditions. Abstract: In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. Abstract: In this paper, a size-dependent formulation is presented for mechanical analyses of inhomogeneous micro-plates based on the modified couple stress theory. The plate properties can arbitrarily vary through the thickness. The governing differential equations of motion are derived for functionally graded (FG) plates with arbitrary shapes utilizing a variational approach. Moreover, the boundary conditions are provided at smooth parts of the plate periphery and also at the sharp corners of the periphery. Utilizing the derived formulation, the free-vibration behavior as well as the static response of a rectangular FG micro-plate is investigated.

Abstract: In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. Abstract: In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. Abstract: In this paper, an application is considered of both active and passive controls, to suppression of chaotic behavior of a simple portal frame, under the excitation of an unbalanced DC motor, with limited power supply (non-ideal problem). The adopted active control strategy consists of two controls: the nonlinear (feedforward) in order to keep the controlled system in a desirable orbit, and the feedback control, which may be obtained by considering state-dependent Riccati equation control to bringing the system into the desired orbit using a magneto rheological (MR) damper. To control the electric current applied in control of the MR damper the Bouc-Wen mathematical model was used to the MR damper. The passive control was obtained by means of a nonlinear sub-structure with properties of nonlinear energy sink. Simulations showed the efficiency of both the passive control (energy pumping) and active control strategies in the suppression of the chaotic behavior.

Abstract: In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. Abstract: During milling of flexible workpieces a regenerative chatter vibration may become a critical factor that limits productivity. It is shown in this paper that a selection of cutting parameters based on a stability lobes diagram may not always be a remedy for low productivity due to increased forced vibration level. Additionally, other factors such as tool wear may limit the selection of stable spindle speeds. This paper presents an active control system that counteracts the development of chatter vibration. The proposed active control system employs Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) algorithm and piezoelectric actuator to suppress vibration during cutting. The Kalman filter is used to estimate the state of the system required by LQG algorithm. The active control introduces damping into the system, thereby raising the critical depth of cut and reducing forced vibration amplitude. Abstract: In 2013 the Editor of Journal of Vibration and Control and SAGE became aware of a peer review ring involving assumed and fabricated identities that appeared to centre around Peter Chen at National Pingtung University of Education, Taiwan (NPUE). SAGE and the Editor then began a complex investigation into the case during the rest of 2013 and 2014. Following an unsatisfactory response from Peter Chen, NPUE was notified. NPUE were serious in addressing the Journal and SAGE’s concerns. NPUE confirmed that the institution was investigating Peter Chen. SAGE subsequently uncovered a citation ring involving the above mentioned author and others. We regret that individual authors have compromised the academic record by perverting the peer review process and apologise to readers. On uncovering problems with peer review and citation SAGE immediately put steps in place to avoid similar vulnerability of the Journal to exploitation in the future. Abstract: The present paper discusses the dispersion equation for horizontally polarized shear waves (SH waves) in a non-homogeneous self-reinforced layer over a semi infinite self-reinforced medium with an irregularity. The dispersion equation has been obtained in closed form. In the isotropic case, when non homogeneity and irregularity are absent, the dispersion equation reduces to standard SH wave equation. The dispersion curves have been presented by means of graphs for different sizes of irregularity and different values of non-homogeneity parameters. The influence of depth of irregularity and non-homogeneity parameters on phase velocity has been studied.

Abstract: The propagation of magneto-thermoelastic plane waves in an initially stressed, homogeneous orthotropic, conducting half-space under a magnetic field, rotation and gravity field have been investigated. The generalized theory of thermoelasticity is employed, by assuming the mechanical behavior as dynamic, to study the problem. The Lame’s potential is used to obtain the frequency equation that determines the velocity of Rayleigh waves that obtained as a real part and the attenuation coefficient as an imaginary part under the rotation, magnetic field, initial stress and gravity field. Numerical results have been given and illustrated graphically for each case considered. Dispersion curves of wave propagation are represented graphically in different theories of thermoelasticity. The results indicate that the effect of rotation, initial stress and gravity field are very pronounced. Abstract: Friction damping is one of the most exploited systems of passive control of the vibration of mechanical systems. In order to mitigate vibration of turbine blades, friction dampers are commonly included in the bladed disk design. A common type of blade-to-blade friction dampers are the so-called underplatform dampers (UPDs); these are metal devices placed under the blade platforms and held in contact with them by the centrifugal force acting during rotation. The effectiveness of UPDs to dissipate energy by friction and reduce vibration amplitude depends mostly on the damper geometry and material and on the static loads pressing the damper against the blade platforms. The common procedure used to estimate the static loads acting on UPDs consists in decoupling the static and the dynamic balance of the damper. A preliminary static analysis of the contact is performed in order to compute the static pressure distribution over the damper/blade interfaces, assuming that it does not change when vibration occurs. In this paper a coupled approach is proposed. The static and the dynamic displacements of blade and UPD are coupled together during the forced response calculation. Both the primary structure (the bladed disk) and the secondary structure (the damper) are modeled by finite elements and linked together by contact elements, allowing for stick, slip and lift off states, placed between each pair of contact nodes, by using a refined version of the state-of-the-art friction contact model. In order to model accurately the blade/damper contact with a large number of contact nodes without increasing proportionally the size of the set of nonlinear equations to be solved, damper and blade dynamics are modeled by linear superposition of a truncated series of normal modes. The proposed method is applied to a bladed disk under cyclic symmetric boundary conditions in order to show the capabilities of the method compared to the classical decoupled approaches

Abstract: In this paper we investigate the problem of non-fragile H∞ controller design for active suspension systems with actuator uncertainty constraints. A half-vehicle model with active suspension system is considered in this paper, the vehicle dynamic system is established with a focus on handling the trade-off of constraints on the heave and pitch acceleration, suspension deflections and tyre strokes. Actuator uncertainties are formulated within the controller design process and the fact of the actuator uncertainties existing in the system is modelled as a continuous-time homogeneous Markov process. A state feedback controller is designed for the purpose of ensuring that the resulting active suspension system is asymptotically stable with a prescribed H∞ disturbance attenuation level while simultaneously satisfying the constraint performance.
