TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine some of the problems associated with the notion of "research by design" and examine the roles of tacit knowledge and explicit knowledge in theory construction, while clarifying the role of implicit knowledge in reflective practice.
Abstract: Mature theory construction in design research has been hampered by ill-considered ideas. The notion of ‘research by design’ is such an idea, conflating practice and research in ways that make explicit theory development difficult. This article examines some of the problems associated with the notion of ‘research by design’. It also examines the roles of tacit knowledge and explicit knowledge in theory construction, while clarifying the role of explicit knowledge in reflective practice.

TL;DR: In this article, composers and contemporary artists were studied to extract the embedded conception of knowledge and its production, and the setting up of conditions for interactive experience illuminates the ways in which experiential knowledge takes place in a distributed manner.
Abstract: New movements in the creative disciplines have disrupted traditional understandings of knowledge and knowledge production. Knowledge in creative practice is increasingly seen through the process of creating, mediating and encountering art rather than in any perceived final form. Examining recent work in the fine arts, this article studies composers and contemporary artists to extract the embedded conception of knowledge and its production.Focusing on the practice of composer Gayle Young and visual artist Tino Sehgal, the setting up of conditions for interactive experience illuminates the ways in which experiential knowledge takes place in a distributed manner. As Csikszentmihalyi (1996: 23) concluded, ‘creativity does not happen inside people's heads, but in the interaction between a person's thoughts and a sociocultural context’. Like creativity, experiential knowledge is inseparable from the context of its production and reception, a fact clarified by recent work in actor network theory. These a...

TL;DR: The authors argue that the continuity of artistic experience with normal processes of living is derived from an impulse to handle materials and to think and feel through their handling, not as it is understood through traditional eighteenth century accounts, but as "sense activity".
Abstract: Creative arts research is often motivated by emotional, personal and subjective concerns; it operates not only on the basis of explicit and exact knowledge, but also on that of tacit and experiential knowledge. Experience operates within in the domain of the aesthetic and knowledge produced through aesthetic experience is always contextual and situated. The continuity of artistic experience with normal processes of living is derived from an impulse to handle materials and to think and feel through their handling. The key term for understanding the relationship between experience, practice and knowledge is ‘aesthetic experience’, not as it is understood through traditional eighteenth century accounts, but as ‘sense activity’.In this article, I will draw on the work of John Dewey, Michael Polanyi and others to argue that creative arts practice as research is an intensification of everyday experiences from which new knowledge or knowing emerges. The ideas presented here will be illustrated with refer...

TL;DR: In this paper, the adoption of hybridized research methods into the creative process is proposed, drawing on the development of praxis-based research into validity claims in the nursing profession.
Abstract: Focussing on visual arts, the article proposes the adoption of hybridized research methods into the creative process, drawing on the development of praxis based research into validity claims in the nursing profession. Building on Habermas's ideas of a performative attitude in inter-subjective communication and Giddens' distinction between self-actualization and narcissism, it is suggested that research into creative self expression can avoid claims of narcissism if it is located in the social realm through the adoption of reflexive and performative research methods.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the practice of artist Alex Katz and how his techniques can be seen to mask the extensive effort involved in the design and construction of his paintings, and how these techniques can enable the subsequent relationship between artist, artwork and viewer to become closer.
Abstract: It is important for artists not only to acknowledge the often ‘tacit’ nature of what they do, but to attempt to articulate their practice in a variety of contexts.Developing knowledge about the complicated processes of making art must inevitably lead to a more enlightened grasp, understanding and encouragement of the artist in the contemporary climate. Thus, the common multiplicity of roles assumed by the artist (e.g. the artist as curator or teacher) should have greater acknowledgement and lead to an enhanced sense of the worth of art in society.A more effective articulation of practice can enable the subsequent relationship between artist, artwork and viewer to become closer. The analysis of tacit and often hidden artmaking processes and meanings should help to develop a more informed viewer. In the article, I will discuss the practice of artist Alex Katz and how his techniques can be seen to mask the extensive effort involved in the design and construction of his paintings. The elegant surfaces ...
