TL;DR: In this paper, a study of the schools of constructivism in general and language teaching in particular in Indonesia was conducted. And the results showed that constructivism can contribute positive impact on educational progress as to improve students ability.
Abstract: This study deals with John Dewey’s constructivism. Dewey’s theory in Jia (2010) is the main idea or theory of conducting this study. The idea of using constructivism theory is not a new theory in educational teaching and learning in Indonesia. The Dewey’s theory states that constructivism can build individual and social knowledge and it is then the result of this study. The essence contained in constructivism theory is the meaning of a learning process. Dewey in Jia (2010) claims that knowledge is uncertain. Knowledge must be applied because it is an interpretation of reality. Case study is the approach used in this study to ensure the validity of the research result (Kothari. 2004). Thus, the purposes of this study are: (1) to shed the light on the schools of constructivism, and (2) to clarify the principles of constructivism in general and language teaching in particular as its contributions in the classroom activities. The result shows that constructivism contribute positive impact on educational progress as to improve students ability because constructivism opens the learner’s curiosity about something new. Students can also build their knowledge to create, and design something related to their needs. Keywords: constructivism, language learning, language teaching, constructivism principles

TL;DR: In this paper, a literature review reveals that most English as a foreign/second language (EFL/ESL) institutions give preferential treatment to NESTs based on some factors.
Abstract: This paper argues that the dichotomy between native English-speaking teachers (NESTs) and non-native English-speaking teachers (NNESTs) has resulted in discriminatory practices in English language teaching (ELT) professionalism. Reviewing four studies investigating discrimination in ELT industry in some Asian countries, this literature review reveals that most English as a foreign/second language (EFL/ESL) institutions give preferential treatment to NESTs based on some factors. Nativeness and nationality are among the top factors of discrimination in English teaching positions. Discrepancy in required academic qualification and income also prove that NNESTs have always been discriminated and marginalized in ELT employment. Furthermore, it is also found that racist policy applied by some institutions recruiting White English teachers solely because of their race and privilege. Finally, it can be concluded that some governments and institutions’ policies in recruiting English teachers have played a big role in perpetuating this discrimination against NNESTs by maintaining the ideology of NESTs as superior teachers in theories and practices of ELT. Abstract: Based on data from the World Bank, one out of ten poor people around the world is the disabled. Poverty experienced by the disabled is a direct and indirect result of the exclusion and marginalization of people with disabilities because of the stigma and prejudices about disability. One of the stigma and prejudice on people with disabilities arise in the educational setting. The United Nations [UN] report showed that 90 % of all children with disabilities in developing countries still do not attend school, and the literacy rate of adults disabled predicted only 1 % (United Nations). Since Indonesia ratified Salamanca declaration, about equal education access for persons with disabilities, some inclusive schools begin to set in Indonesia. The government started affirming that Children With Special Needs (CWSN) basically has the right to education as normal children, without discriminated, by placed CWSN in special schools that are different from normal children. This article attempts to review various studies regarding the implementation of inclusive schools in Indonesia, to get a picture about the process of eliminating discrimination against students with special needs in Indonesian school. TL;DR: A critical review of competency modelling literature and practice from the major perspectives (including applied, academic, and professional) is presented in this article to shed additional light on the advantages and practices of the competency modeling, as well as outlining current challenges in such a vibrant domain.
Abstract: Competency models are commonly practiced today in many organizations as they lead to significant human resource development that provides organizations with a competitive edge. Because of their immense importance, measurement and modelling of competencies has become an important research field. However, despite the extensive research, there are large research gaps regarding the empirical knowledge and applicability of competency models. This article presents a critical review of competency modelling literature and practice from the major perspectives (including applied, academic, and professional) in an attempt to shed additional light on the advantages and practices of competency modelling, as well as outlining current challenges in such a vibrant domain. The intention, in this article, was to build a coherent argument with an objective of illustrating the effective use, as well as deficiencies in this domain based on aggregated experiences of many authors across many years and settings. The author explicitly acknowledges that the approach for this critical review has many limitations, since it is experience-based rather than empirically based. Yet, it is believed that this article may provide a framework that can lead to a solid investigation of competency modelling with more rigor than they have been afforded to date. TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss the debate concerning the concept of Halal tourism by exploring the case of Lombok, Indonesia as a Halal tourist destination, and argue that Lombok tends to develop branding-based Halal Tourism rather than value-based tourism.
Abstract: This paper discusses the debate concerning the concept of “Halal” tourism by exploring the case of Lombok, Indonesia as a Halal tourist destination. Halal tourism has become a new trend in global tourism motivated by the growing number of Muslim travelers. This condition potentially brings substantial foreign earnings from tourism sector. Indonesia, as a country with the largest Muslim population in the world is also interested to follow the trend. In 2015, Lombok participated in the World Halal Tourism Summit held in Dubai and was awarded the “World Best Halal Tourist Destination” and the “World Best Halal Honeymoon Tourism.” This has motivated the local government to develop Halal tourism seriously. However, there is no concrete concept concerning the kind of Halal tourism to be developed. In the condition of “Halal tourism in the making” in Lombok, this research explores the available concept of Halal tourism in the literature, and tries to match the ideas with the practices of Halal tourism that is being developed in Lombok. This paper argues that Lombok tends to develop branding-based Halal tourism than value-based Halal tourism. Findings from the fieldwork research show that the success of Lombok to be acknowledged as Halal tourist destination is not yet followed by the development of tourism institutions and infrastructures, which are fully oriented toward Halal tourism according to Islamic values. TL;DR: In this paper, a modified version of the TAM acceptance model was used to measure the user attitude towards the use of a relatively new streaming service using an online questionnaire survey from more than 300 participants.
Abstract: This paper presents a novel acceptance model for an online music streaming scenario of Thailand. The music streaming industry has been gaining in popularity in the recent times. This research has been conducted in order to measure the user attitude towards the use of this relatively new service using a modified version of the popular Technology Acceptance Model. We try to identify the most popular music-streaming service of Thailand and also the factors that affect the use of such a service. Data has been collected in the form of an online questionnaire survey from more than 300 participants for the purpose of model building and validation. A subsequent regression analysis carried out on the proposed model explains more than 60 percent of the variance of the dependent variable i.e. Behavioral Intention in our case to the predictor variables Perceived Usefulness, Perceived Ease of Use, Perceived Enjoyment and Perceived Satisfaction Level. The results show that Perceived Enjoyment and Perceived satisfaction are the two strongest predictors for Behavioral Intention which is quite different from that of the utilitarian type of information systems. Abstract: This quasi-experimental study was carried out based on a pretest-posttest one group design with two purposes: (1) to investigate the effect of the process writing approach (PWA) on the essay writing performance of students of English in an overly large class at a Thai university, and (2) to explore the participants’ opinions towards the PWA. The participants were 55 third-year students of English purposively selected for the study. The experimental procedures for the investigation lasted 10 weeks. The data with regard to the dimension of writing performance were obtained via evaluation by two experts based on Jacobs et al.’s (1981) ESL Composition Profile of academic essays generated by the students at the beginning and end of the treatment. Data pertaining to the participants’ opinions were collected through the Process Writing Approach (PWA) questionnaire. The pre-and post-test scores were computed for mean score differences using a paired sample t-test, and descriptive statistics were used to analyze the questionnaire data. The results showed that the process writing approach had a significant effect (p<.05) on the writing performance of the students in an overly large class, and the students expressed very positive opinions towards the PWA. Implications for the use of process writing approach in an overcrowded EFL writing class and recommendations for further written expression studies were offered. Abstract: Rapid development of information and technology in this globalization era has driven the transition of world economy, from previously labor and market economy to knowledge economy Nation-states’ global competitiveness is measured partly by the number of highly educated people within its society By becoming “world-class”, universities are believed to play an important role to boost a country’s competitiveness level This paper discusses the internationalization of higher education as one of important instruments in achieving the goal to create knowledge-based economy This study identifies the internationalization initiatives of the Indonesian and South Korean governments from national level, and universities from institutional level The objective of taking South Korea as comparison to Indonesia is because both countries are middle power and non-English speaking Asian countries, which started their internationalization in early 2000s with the same aspirations: higher education reform towards knowledge economy The results show that both Indonesia and South Korea have a state-led internationalization, with more advance development and achievement in South Korean case In the case of Indonesia, Indonesia still faces challenges such as the competitive regional arrangement in ASEAN; the dilemma between quantitative targets and quality assurance of internationalization initiatives such as international publication, patents, and international students; also the challenge to create more detail programs and strategies other than just financial supports from government to widen up the other aspects of internationalization efforts However, with the internationalization agenda rising in many countries, Indonesia has the opportunity to take a lesson from other countries’ experiences, including from South Korea Keywords: internationalization, higher education, knowledge economy, Indonesia, South Korea

Abstract: Stock Price Crash Risk (SPCR) is the risk of stock price collapse. SPCR conditions must be understood by stakeholders, among others: for regulators in order to avoid the devastation of stock prices that have systemic impact on the capital market; for suppliers to sell their products to the company; for company employees to maintain the sustainability of the company so that they can still work; for shareholders to keep the stock of the company from the risk of delisting in the capital market; to the prospective investor as the basis of investment decision in the capital market; and to the Investment Manager in order to master the stock portfolio risk knowledge in the capital market. We examine the relation among implementation of sustainability reporting strategy (SRS) impact on SPCR with sustainability reporting quality (SRQ) as variable intervening. Using signaling theory, we find that a good company will provide signal hints for stakeholders regarding SRS that have a significant effect on the SRQ. This provides legitimacy for the company by gaining stakeholders’ confidence to buy its stocks (shares) so as to minimize SPCR. TL;DR: The authors investigates the linguistic taboos in the Karonese culture viewed from linguistic anthropology point of view, which concerns with the meaning of taboo based on performance, indexicality, and participation.
Abstract: This paper investigates the linguistic taboos in the Karonese culture viewed from linguistic anthropology point of view. It concerns with the meaning of taboo based on performance, indexicality, and participation [4]. With this approach, linguistic taboos are explored not only from its lexical or words only, they are viewed from the process of communication totally, included lexical or words, the way to speak, the participants of speaking, and the contexts of communication. The theory used is proposed by Freud (1913/2004: 21), that taboo, on the one hand, is sacred, consecrated, and on the other uncanny, dangerous, forbidden, and unclean. Thus ‘taboo’ has about it a sense of something unapproachable and it is principally expressed in prohibitions and restrictions. Ethnographic method proposed by Spradley (1980) is applied in doing the research. The result shows that the linguistics taboos are classified into taboo in kinship, i.e. between bengkila and permain, turangku and turangku, and mami and kela; context-specific taboos, i.e. words derived from non-taboo words: such as organs of body, animals and supernatural entity, and certain words; and words related to social and physical defects: such as illness, death, and killing; and general taboos, i.e. swearing and unmentionable words. The swearing includes scatology or dirt, sexual organs, sexual acts, mothers or family, ancestors, animals, death, illness, and prostitution. Whereas, unmentionable words include dirty words relating to sex organs, sexual activities, bodily effluvia, micturition and defecation, and naming or addressing family and relatives. TL;DR: Results show that the proposed Tree-Seed Algorithm (TSA) proposed for solving continuous optimization problems by imitating relationship between the trees and their seeds in nature produces effective and comparable solutions in terms of solution quality.
Abstract: Population-based swarm or evolutionary computation algorithms in optimization are attracted the interest of the researchers due their simple structure, optimization performance, easy-adaptation. Binary optimization problems can be also solved by using these algorithms. This paper focuses on solving large scale binary optimization problems by using Tree-Seed Algorithm (TSA) proposed for solving continuous optimization problems by imitating relationship between the trees and their seeds in nature. The basic TSA is modified by using xor logic gate for solving binary optimization problems in this study. In order to investigate the performance of the proposed algorithm, the numeric benchmark problems with the different dimensions are considered and obtained results show that the proposed algorithm produces effective and comparable solutions in terms of solution quality. Keywords : binary optimization, tree-seed algorithm, xor-gate, large-scale optimization

Abstract: The Ministry of Cooperative and SME discloses currently the number of SME is 56.5 million units and 98.9% is micro, one of which is fashion business that is needed by the people (HTTPS://www.antaranews.com). The phenomenon of people’s demand for clothing has become an opportunity for the creative industry community to develop a business in the fashion industry by presenting the fulfillment ground for clothing shopping. The objectives of this research are to analyze the influence of Intellectual Capital on Business Performance and to analyze the influence of Human Capital, Technological Capital, Customer Capital, and Social Capital partially on Business Performance. The sample of this study is 76 MSME in fashion industry that have operated for more than two years and specifically along Universitas Sumatera Utara. Result shows that intellectual capital has a positive and significant effect on business performance. Human capital, technological capital, and social capital partially have positive and significant effect on business performance. While customer capital has insignificant effect on business performance. In general, MSMEs owner and manager should focus in improving intellectual capital strategy in order to improve the business performance.
