Abstract: Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a simulation-based education course and to evaluate the results after the application for second year nursing students. Methods: This study was a non-equivalent control pre-post design. Based on the clinical situation scenarios about patients with COPD and MI, a total of two simulation-based learning modules was developed. Pretest and posttest was conducted to evaluate the difference in critical thinking disposition, problem solving, and clinical competence between two groups of 102 students for the experimental group, 2007 and 90 students for the control group, 2006. The experimental group conducted a clinical performance evaluation in the final test, on December 10, 2007. Results: In the experimental group, knowledge related to learning objectives was significantly increased and core intervention was performed almost exactly, but the same result was not observed in domains of analysis of laboratory test, and nursing education for patients. Self-evaluated clinical competence and problem solving level were significantly more improved in the experimental group than control group, but critical thinking disposition level wasn't. Conclusion: In conclusion, a simulation-based education course needs to utilize self-directed learning module like computer-based learning through web contents and MicroSim and video productions for improving nursing students' critical thinking.

Abstract: Purpose: In this study the literature of compassion fatigue in nurses was reviewed in order to analyze the trends of overall research for level of fatigue, symptoms, and factors. Methods: For this study, five databases were searched using the key words ‘compassion fatigue’, ‘secondary traumatization’, ‘secondary traumatic stress’, and ‘vicarious traumatization’. Thirty-six papers were analyzed. Results: Most of the compassion fatigue research (86%) was conducted between 2006 and 2011 and the most frequent research approach was quantitative research with the ProQOL which was the most frequently used instrument in the studies. He research was conducted in pediatric, emergency & trauma, oncology, psychiatric, and hospice units with no consistent patterns of t compassion fatigue levels. Factors affecting compassion fatigue were personal factors such as age, education background, work-related factors such as caring for trauma patients, work hours, psychological factors such as work stress, burnout, and support/coping factors such as organizational support, and coping resources. Conclusion: Nurses’ compassion fatigue varied from low to high by nursing specialties. Many factors affected the compassion fatigue of nurses. In the future there is a need for study on Korean nurses, and identification of groups at risk for compassion fatigue. Furthermore there is a need to develop management programs on compassion fatigue in nurses, stress reduction and wellbeing.

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this study was to conduct a systematically review of factors related to the reported intention of hospital nurses in Korea to leave their positions. Methods: Appropriate studies in the recent ten years were selected from databases. A total of 263 studies were selected for the systematic review on the basis of the PRISMA flow. The correlational effect size of 35 studies was analyzed through meta-analysis using CMA 3.0. Results: Through systematic review, 52 related factors were classified by ecological system: 18 individual, 12 microsystem, 11 mesosystem, 8 exosystem, and 3 macrosystem. The overall effect size of turnover intention was 3.26. The total correlational effect size of related factors was 0.28: 0.14 for individual, 0.50 for microsystem, 0.25 for mesosystem and 0.40 for exosystem. Among single factors with larger effect size, emotional labor, role conflict, and work-home conflict were classified into contributors whereas organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and internal marketing were classified as inhibitors. Conclusion: Previous studies focused on the individual and the microsystem in the quantitative respect. In addition, the effect size was relatively greater for the microsystem and the exosystem. It is therefore necessary to conduct further research on the systems with larger effects.

Abstract: Purpose: This study was examined to identify the relationship among knowledge, attitude, and compliance with preventive behavior on influenza A (H1N1) by University students. Methods: The sample consisted of 101 students. The data were collected from August to September 2009 and analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Abstract: Purpose: Knowledge, clinical reasoning, and self-confidence are the basis for undergraduate education, and determine students’ level of competence. The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of the addition of a one-time simulation experience to the didactic curriculum on nursing students’ knowledge acquisition, clinical reasoning skill, and self-confidence. Methods: Using a quasi-experimental crossover design consisted of intervention and wait-list control groups. Participants were non-randomly assigned to the first intervention group (Group A, n=48) or the wait-list control group (Group B, n=46). Knowledge level was assessed through a multiple choice written test, and clinical reasoning skill was measured using a nursing process model-based rubric. Self-confidence was measured using a self-reported questionnaire. Results: Results indicated that students in the simulation group scored significantly higher on clinical reasoning skill and related knowledge than those in the didactic lecture group; no difference was found for self-confidence. Conclusion: Findings suggest that undergraduate nursing education requires a simulation-based curriculum for clinical reasoning development and knowledge acquisition.
