TL;DR: HPM is introduced to solve differential system which describes SIR epidemic model that monitors the temporal dynamics of a childhood disease in the presence of preventive vaccine and reveals the vaccination reproductive number for disease control and eradication.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to introduce an efficient method for solving susceptible‐infected‐removed (SIR) epidemic model. A SIR model that monitors the temporal dynamics of a childhood disease in the presence of preventive vaccine. The qualitative analysis reveals the vaccination reproductive number for disease control and eradication. It introduces homotopy perturbation method (HPM) to overcome these problems.Design/methodology/approach – The paper considers HPM to solve differential system which describes SIR epidemic model. The essential idea of this method is to introduce a homotopy parameter, say p, which takes values from 0 to 1. When p=0, the system of equations usually reduces to a sufficiently simplified form, which normally admits a rather simple solution. As p is gradually increased to 1, the system goes through a sequence of deformations, the solution for each of which is close to that at the previous stage of deformation. One of the most remarkable features of the HPM is that usu...

TL;DR: A small periodic signal in noise can be detected by Duffing oscillator via a transition from chaotic motion to periodic motion, and the paper shows how to calculate the amplitude/phase in low signal‐to‐noise ratios.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to detect the periodic signal under strong noise background, and estimate its amplitude/phase.Design/methodology/approach – Melnikov method is adopted as calculating the threshold value when chaos occurs, and the detected signal is taken as a system parameter. The system's output state is changed if the parameter has a slight change near the threshold. Meantime, the phase of system's output is recognized to judge whether the output state changes, and the signal parameter is estimated according to the necessary condition.Findings – A small periodic signal in noise can be detected by Duffing oscillator via a transition from chaotic motion to periodic motion.Research limitations/implications – The paper shows how to calculate the amplitude/phase in low signal‐to‐noise ratios.Practical implications – The Duffing system is sensitive to the weak periodic signal and has definite immunity to noise, so it is easy to construct a system composed of many oscillators that could p...

TL;DR: In this article, a link between the MBTI type schema, a trait space, and a capacity for sociocultural descriptions is proposed. But the authors do not consider the role of personality traits in the creation of enduring states.
Abstract: Purpose – Pluralities of personality schemas reside across different Maruyama universes suggesting incommensurability and isolation. Schemas may migrate across Maruyama universes given appropriate means. As illustration, the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) schema for personality temperament is migrated into a sociocognitive schema through the intermediary of knowledge cybernetics (KC). MBTI is a type approach that operates with polar opposites; however, conceptually there is no reason for it not to be associated with a trait space. Supposing that MBTI has traits at some horizon of meaning, then since traits are responsible for the creation of enduring states, sociocognitive explanations should be able to explain the stable states consistent with a variation of the McCrae and Costa proposition. As a result this paper aims to formulate for the first time a link between the MBTI type schema, a trait space, and a capacity for sociocultural descriptions.Design/methodology/approach – The paper uses the meta‐...

TL;DR: A new requisitely holistic definition of business ethics (BE) as a crucial component of business cybernetics and practice is offered, which considers a basic problem: how humans use BE to influence their business processes.
Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to offer a new requisitely holistic definition of business ethics (BE) as a crucial component of business cybernetics and practice. The present contribution considers a basic problem: how humans use BE to influence their business processes. Therefore, business is/should be investigated from the viewpoint of ethics. Requisite holism of understanding and consideration of BE in business reality is unavoidable; it can (and must) result from findings and considerations of the interdependence between business practice, ethics, and BE.Design/methodology/approach – In this paper, qualitative analysis is applied on the basis of the cybernetics (e.g. especially business cybernetics), dialectical systems theory, and ethics theory.Findings – Ethics is a crucial emotional part of human attributes. They can be viewed as the subjective part of the starting points of any human acting/behavior process, including business. Thus, ethics (may) have/has a crucial role in business cyberne...

Abstract: Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to apply grey system theory to population system and project China's population.Design/methodology/approach – The paper applies the GM(1,1) model to China's population projections. Two key aspects of the method are crucial for obtaining best accuracy of prediction. They are the choice of the length for the original data to be used in the model and the adoption of the GM(1,1) metabolic model in prediction. The former determines what initial data to be used while the latter describes an iteration process on how to proceed to predict.Findings – The results show that in 2015 China's population will reach 1.37 billion and in 2050 it will be between 1.42 and 1.48 billion, which is in accordance with the latest projections from the UN. The findings show the GM(1,1) metabolic model is an effective mathematical means in population projections.Research limitations/implications – The paper suggests that GM(1,1) metabolic model can provide an effective simulation model for compl...
