Abstract: Information and communication technology (ICT) has changed the world of library such that activities been carried out manually before are now been automated. The work of library staff are now being characterized by information and communication technologies. Academic libraries were observed to be more equipped with information infrastructures more than any other type of libraries, but no library no matter how well equipped that doesn’t require the service of a workforce that is highly competent in the use of ICT tools, as such information infrastructure will remain unused or under-utilized. It is in connection to the above, that this study assessed the ICT competence of library staff in selected universities in Kwara state using a descriptive survey design of quantitative research method, where sample size of one hundred and twenty two (122) were drawn from population of one hundred and ninety one (191). Questionnaire served as instrument for data collection, with one hundred and nine participants (which constitute 89.3% return rate) fully completed and returned the instrument. Result of findings demonstrated a high level of ICT competency on the part of library staff in selected university libraries (University of Ilorin, Kwara State University and Al-Hikmah University), most especially on skills that were considered basic and intermediate ICT skill. Verdict from the study has it that library staff in those universities can effectively deploy ICT tools for operations in the library. They identified library schools, computer training centers, workshops and seminars, personal training, watching demonstrations on YouTube, guidance from friends and relatives as sources from which Library staff can acquirer ICT skills, but more emphases is on having additional qualification in computer science. Constraints to ICT skills acquisition identified include; tight working schedule, lack of motivation, lack of experience, inadequate training, and inappropriate library and information science curriculum. Identified challenges militating against effective utilization of ICT tools in the library for dynamic information service delivery include; lack of adequate information infrastructure, absent of provision for staff training and development, limited and tighter budget for the library, lack of technological know-how, fear of technology on the part of library staff as well as epileptic power supply. Sequential to the above identified challenges and constraints, the study recommends that library management should make available adequate information infrastructure and as well make provision for staff development and training. Experienced staff should as well train the upcoming or new staff in the library. Library schools should revise curriculum and design one that will accommodate development in information and communication technology. Professional associations and regulatory bodies should organized regular seminars and workshops that will improve ICT skills of librarians.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigated the internet use and its impact on Senior High School students in the Wa Municipality and concluded that different uses of the internet among students do not influence their academic performance.
Abstract: The internet is a technology that has become an enormous part of people’s daily lives. Over the last decades, internet connectivity has improved tremendously and is available everywhere such as homes, offices, travels and schools. Today, empirical studies report that access to information can influence the academic performance of students. However, studies on internet use among Senior High School Students are limited in the Wa Municipality making it uncertain whether Senior High School Students in the Wa Municipality use internet and the impact it makes in their academic performance. Hence, this study investigates the internet use and its impact on Senior High School students in the Wa Municipality. Primary data were obtained from a random selection of 314 Senior High School Students who are in their third year. The data were collected using a questionnaire and then analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square and ANOVA. The results indicate that sources of internet to Senior High School Students include the School Information Communication Laboratory, mobile phones, household internet facilities, and public internet cafes. Besides, students’ access to internet was found to have a positive influence on their academic performance. However, different uses of the internet among students do not influence their academic performance. The study concludes that availability of different internet sources to students does not grant all of them immediate access. It is therefore, recommended that Heads of Senior High School should liaise with policy makers and management of Ghana Education Service to provide internet infrastructure in schools. This is relevant because provision of internet infrastructure in schools is a key strategy to promoting academic performance.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the role of school libraries in promoting reading culture among secondary school students, using F.G.C Jos as a case study, and revealed that students do not have opportunities of borrowing books from the library, and the library is not integrated in the school curriculum.
Abstract: For the past couple of years, reading culture has been on the decline, especially in Nigeria, and Africa in general. Research has shown that this is partly due to the emergence of Technology and the rise of social media. It is despairing that young adults spend hours watching televisions, and chatting on social sites at the detriment of reading. This study examined the roles school libraries can play in promoting reading culture among secondary school students, using F.G.C Jos as a case study. On the basis of this, five (5) research questions were developed to guide the researchers. The descriptive survey method was used, and simple random sampling adopted. Questionnaire was the major instrument of data collection. Results of the findings were interpreted using simple percentages and organized in tables, and charts for clarity and better comprehension. The results of the findings revealed that students do not have good reading habit. This was represented by 51.4% who read for only 1-2 hours on a daily basis, which is unsatisfactory. Also students depend largely on textbooks and lecture notes as sources of reading materials, hence they read only to pass examinations; this is an indication of poor reading habit. The findings also revealed that students do not have opportunities of borrowing books from the library, and the library is not integrated in the school curriculum. Also, it was revealed that major factors hindering students from reading include watching television, phone addiction/chatting on social sites, and lack of interesting books.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigated the factors that drive users' engagement with social media and further examined the relationship of users engagement with online social networks and actual library use from both users and librarians' perspectives.
Abstract: The mainstream use of social media has impacted the library as it has been identified to be an efficient platform for libraries to foster networking and enhance engagement with their user community. The unique characteristics of social media with ‘high tech’, ‘interactive’ blend with the ‘human touch’ give a valuable means for libraries to provide information resources and services beyond their physical walls. However, despite its widespread usage, an engagement rate on social media is still low among library users and evaluation of social media use is still elusive and scarce in the library literature. Prior studies have yet to reveal to what extent the presence of social media triggers users’ awareness and influence their engagement. Subsequently, how it further impacts the actual library usage among end-users. Therefore, the present study attempts to investigate the factors that drive users’ engagement with social media and further examine the relationship of users’ engagement with social media and actual library use from both users and librarians’ perspectives. A mixed method approach was employed, and the study population consists of selected State Public and Academic Libraries in Malaysia. The integration of DeLone and McLean’s Information Systems Success Model (ISSM), Perceived Interactivity (PI) and Consumer Online Engagement (COE) models were adapted to establish the direction of the research. A total of 334 respondents which consisted of library users; and 11 interview participants comprise of professional librarians. The statistical data was analysed usingSPSSand SmartPLS, while thematic analysis was employed for the qualitative approach. The findings indicated that Information Quality, Perceived Interactivity, and Perceived Net Benefit have empirically proven to be significant predictors of users’ engagement with social media. The study also revealed that two dimensions of online engagement (affective and behavioural) have a positive and statistically significant effect on actual library use; while cognitive engagement proves to be insignificant. The study is significant in providing libraries a holistic overview about determinants of social media engagement and offers guidelines on evaluation of library social media. It also explored the potential and gauges the prospective areas of improvement for harnessing the use of library resources and services in meeting users’ ever-changing needs. Finally, the study proposed a framework for social media engagement evaluation for libraries which act as a benchmark to determine the best social media platforms to be adopted by libraries. Furthermore, the proposed criteria can be applied to increase users’ awareness and greater users’ engagement of library services.
