Abstract: THE EFFECT OF THICKNESS OF CEMENT MORTAR COATINGS IN PROVIDING CORROSION PROTECTION TO STEEL IN PRESTRESSED CONCRETE PIPE IS DISCUSSED. IN ADDITION, THE AUTHOR PRESENTS RESULTS OF ANALYSES IN DETERMINING TO WHAT DEGREE COATING THICKNESS AFFECTS THE COATINGS PERFORMANCE IN PROTECTING REINFORCING STEEL. GENERALLY SPEAKING, INCREASING THICKNESS OFFERS INCREASED PROTECTION, BUT THIS BENEFIT FOLLOWS A LAW OF DIMINISHING RETURNS. CORROSION OF MORTAR COATED STEEL APPEARS TO BE CATHODICALLY CONTROLLED, WITH THE DIFFUSION OF OXYGEN THROUGH MOIST OR SATURATED MORTAR DETERMING THE CORROSION RATE. /AUTHOR/
