TL;DR: In this paper, Anderson examines what the barriers and opportunities are for governments considering privatization of their State-owned mining interests and proposes a set of conditions against which to measure the potential success of policies designed to achieve sus-tainability in mining and concludes with a discussion of the barriers, obstacles, opportunities, and risks in regimes considering privatisation of mining.
Abstract: An ever more crucial question is how to render the benefits which mining brings, while minimizing or mitigating the environmental costs. In this paper Kathleen Anderson examines what the barriers and opportunities are for governments considering privatization of their State-owned mining interests. Kathleen Anderson proposes a set of conditions against which to measure the potential success of policies designed to achieve sus-tainability in mining and concludes with a discussion of the barriers, obstacles, opportunities, and risks in regimes considering privatization of mining.

TL;DR: A survey of the corporate structure of the iron ore industry during the last 20 years is presented in this paper, where present changes in ownership and control are discussed and possible future trends are identified.
Abstract: In 1975 the three leading iron ore companies, CVRD, USX and LKAB controlled 19 per cent of Western world production. In 1993 this figure had increased to 34 per cent and CVRD was still to find at the top followed by BHP and RTZ. This is a unique trend of increasing corporate concentration. In most major non-ferrous minerals and metals a deconcentration has taken place during the same period. This paper surveys the corporate structure of the iron ore industry during the last 20 years. Present changes in ownership and control are discussed and possible future trends are identified.

TL;DR: An overview of the main potentials of the mining industry in Brazil and its challenges is presented in this article, where the authors present an overview of some of the challenges faced by the industry.
Abstract: This paper presents an overview of the main potentials of the mining industry in Brazil and its challenges Although the country is well endowed with mineral resources, some of these are unexploited due to several factors, eg an economic unstabili-ty that prevailed in the last decades, adverse international market, and counteracting legislation changes occurred in 1988 The authors review some of the main challenges for the mineral industry to overcome This paper was presented to the First International Symposium on Mining & Development, July 1995, Campinas, Brazil

TL;DR: In this paper, a historical analysis of the evolution of energy and metals consumption and production in less developed countries (LDCs), encompassing a period of 25 years (1965-90), focusing specially on Latin America and on Brazil, is presented.
Abstract: This paper presents a historical analysis of the evolution of the energy and metals consumption and production in less developed countries (LDCs), encompassing a period of 25 years (1965–90), focusing specially on Latin America and on Brazil. The period permits an evaluation of the impact of the energy crisis on patterns of economic growth, associated to energy and metal production profiles in developing and developed countries. This complex relationship is evaluated, using aluminium, copper and crude steel consumption and production profiles. This paper was presented to the First International Symposium on Mining & Development, July 1995, Campinas, Brazil.

TL;DR: Panama is going through a period of intensive exploration activities as discussed by the authors, and there are 147 concessions for exploration and exploitation covering almost one quarter of the territory of Panama covering almost 1.5 million square kilometres.
Abstract: Panama is going through a period of intensive exploration activities. Presently there are 147 concessions for exploration and exploitation covering almost one quarter of the territory of Panama. Two major actors are Cyprus Amax and Mi-namericorporation.

TL;DR: In this article, the impact of advanced materials on producers of traditional metals is analyzed and an analysis of their different end-use markets is provided. But unless the prices of traditional metal increase substantially or if new regulations on the environment greatly stimulate the use of advanced material, their direct impact during the next decade will be less dramatic than previously expected.
Abstract: In order to better understand the impact of advanced materials on producers of traditional metals, this paper provides an analysis of their different end-use markets. Unless the prices of traditional metals increase substantially or if new regulations on the environment greatly stimulate the use of advanced materials, their direct impact during the next decade will be less dramatic than previously expected. Despite this, mineral producing countries should continue their monitoring of advanced materials. They represent the media that diffuse new technologies through industrial economies. Also they may provide opportunities for improving mining and mineral processing technology. This paper was presented at the First International Symposium on Mining and Development, Campinas, Brazil, July 1995. See also RMR Vol 11 No 2.

TL;DR: In the early 1970s, the global economic model based on the metal-mechanic industry has shown signs of exhaustion, a development which has coincided with the arrival of a new economic order based on technological development and services.
Abstract: Since the early 1970s, the global economic model based on the metal-mechanic industry has shown signs of exhaustion, a development which has coincided with the arrival of a new economic order based on technological development and services. The situation has led to overproduction and mounting stockpiles of minerals around the world. These changes have reverberated on the world mineral market, yet it is in this setting that the state of Para of Brazil has undertaken a series of mineral developments. This paper was presented to the First International Symposium on Mining & Development, July 1995, Campinas, Brazil.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyze the environmental and economic implications of current trade policies and changes in the world trading system for metal producers and consumers, and the principal factor is the trade imbalance.
