TL;DR: In this article, the authors make proposals for how to plan for the reorientation of the lives of those affected by mine closure or downscaling, focusing on South Africa.
Abstract: Environmental concerns have increasingly led governments to implement legislation which ensures that mining companies plan for the depletion of non-renewable resources and the eventual closure of mining operations. Focusing on South Africa, this paper will make proposals for how to plan for the reorientation of the lives of those affected by mine closure or downscaling.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that 21st century policies for mining and mineral resource development in Asia-Pacific will need to take account of and include the small-scale mining sector.
Abstract: Small-scale mining is a significant part of the minerals sector. The main premise of this article is that 21st century policies for mining and mineral resource development in Asia-Pacific will need to take account of and include the small-scale mining sector. There are economic reasons for this and there are examples around the world to show that exclusion and neglect of the sector results in very negative ecological and social impacts. Successful implementation of an holistic approach in minerals policy and development will often be very difficult indeed - for a variety of reasons, some of which are discussed below - but not necessarily impossible.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argued that there is a great deal of scope for developing the small and mid-scale mining sectors in South Africa and that, in any initiative to develop these sectors, caution, maturity and common sense is desirable.
Abstract: In this article it is argued that there is a great deal of scope for developing the small and mid-scale mining sectors in South Africa. Relative to other countries, these sectors are underdeveloped but, in any initiative to develop these sectors, caution, maturity and common sense is desirable. Small-scale mining can make a significant contribution to local economic development. At a national level its contribution is likely to be negligible. Mid-scale mining has considerably more potential for material economic impact. The article is a revised version of a paper presented at the Windhoek seminar.

TL;DR: The discussion about the privatisation of the Brazilian mining giant CVRD started in the latest issue of Raw Materials Report as mentioned in this paper, and the editors hope to publish new inputs in the future, when the outcome of the deal becomes clear.

TL;DR: Luossavaara-Kirunavaara AB (LKAB) as discussed by the authors is the largest iron ore producer in the world and has a competitive cost structure in this market and a strong market position.
Abstract: LKAB (Luossavaara-Kirunavaara AB), the iron ore producer in the north of Sweden, has its comparative advantage in the market for pellets. A large deposit of magnetic ore gives LKAB a competitive cost structure in this market and a strong market position in this market. Although the market for pellets is more sensitive compared to the market for fines, LKAB seems less sensitive than its major competitors. The rise of new steel making technologies and their impact on iron ore has, in addition, worked in favor of LKAB. This paper will focus on LKAB and identify and analyze the internal and external factors that made the successful focusing on the pellet market possible. The paper is based on official statistics, statistics provided by LKAB, and on personal interviews with researchers, managers, and workers within the company.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of lower gold prices and the subsequent downscaling of the South African mining industry were discussed and discussed by the MEPC, an autonomous policy research body aiming to present policy options and their implications.
Abstract: Together with the previous article by J Rocha and J Bristow this paper by Michael Solomon, also from the MEPC in Johannesburg, provide a thorough discussion of the effects of lower gold prices and the subsequent downscaling of the South African mining industry MEPC is an autonomous policy research body aiming to present policy options and their implications to the South African stake holders and decision makers in the minerals industry MEPC has established itself as an independent source of policy ideas and a facilitator in the policy developing process in South Africa

TL;DR: The Uis mine in Namibia has been one of the world's largest open cast, hard rock tin producers and has been in operation in the desert of western Namibia for almost 50 years.
Abstract: For almost 50 years Uis mine, one of the world's largest open cast, hard rock tin producers, has been in operation in the desert of western Namibia. In the early 1990s the mine closed down and the community in Uis faced severe problems. Legal, safe and economically sustainable small scale tin mining might be one alternative for the future of Uis. The following articles, originally presented at a November 1996 seminar held in Windhoek, describe the Uis pilot project and also give a summary of the South African small scale mining situation.

TL;DR: In this paper, an economic assessment is made where possible production from zinc containing electric arc furnace dust is compared to conventional production from ore. The assessment shows that it is reasonable to assume that zinc production from dust would be profitable under present market conditions.
Abstract: In the present study, some technological and economic fundamentals of zinc production are discussed. An economic assessment is made where possible production from zinc containing electric arc furnace dust is compared to conventional production from ore. The assessment shows that it is reasonable to assume that zinc production from dust would be profitable under present market conditions. This would, however, still require some technological problems to be solved.

TL;DR: The main mineral producer in Brazil is Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), now to be privatised as mentioned in this paper, and the main issues concerning the privatisation of this large state owned mining group are considered.
Abstract: The main mineral producer in Brazil is Companhia Vale do Rio Doce (CVRD), now to be privatised. In this article the main issues concerning the privatisation of this large state owned mining group are considered. Mineral production affects society in several different ways, e.g. influencing other sectors that use minerals and ores as inputs for their production. The aim of this paper is to promote a discussion about why the company is being targeted for privatisation, who are the likely winners and losers, and the role of the state as a mineral producer.
