Abstract: In this paper, we review the background and state-of-the-art of big data. We first introduce the general background of big data and review related technologies, such as could computing, Internet of Things, data centers, and Hadoop. We then focus on the four phases of the value chain of big data, i.e., data generation, data acquisition, data storage, and data analysis. For each phase, we introduce the general background, discuss the technical challenges, and review the latest advances. We finally examine the several representative applications of big data, including enterprise management, Internet of Things, online social networks, medial applications, collective intelligence, and smart grid. These discussions aim to provide a comprehensive overview and big-picture to readers of this exciting area. This survey is concluded with a discussion of open problems and future directions.

Abstract: We present the Wireless Routing Protocol (WRP). In WRP, routing nodes communicate the distance and second-to-last hop for each destination. WRP reduces the number of cases in which a temporary routing loop can occur, which accounts for its fast convergence properties. A detailed proof of correctness is presented and its performance is compared by simulation with the performance of the distributed Bellman-Ford Algorithm (DBF), DUAL (a loop-free distance-vector algorithm) and an Ideal Link-state Algorithm (ILS), which represent the state of the art of internet routing. The simulation results indicate that WRP is the most efficient of the alternatives analyzed.

Abstract: Wireless multimedia applications require significant bandwidth, some of which will be provided by third-generation (3G) services. even with substantial investment in 3G infrastructure, the radio spectrum allocated to 3G will be limited. Cognitive radio offers a mechanism for the flexible pooling of radio spectrum using a new class of protocols called formal radio etiquettes. This approach could expand the bandwidth available for conventional uses (e.g., police, fire and rescue) and extend the spatial coverage of 3G in a novel way. Cognitive radio is a particular extension of software radio that employs model-based reasoning about users, multimedia content, and communications context. This paper characterizes the potential contributions of cognitive radio to spectrum pooling and outlines an initial framework for formal radio-etiquette protocols.

Abstract: Advances in wireless communication technologies, such as wearable and implantable biosensors, along with recent developments in the embedded computing area are enabling the design, development, and implementation of body area networks. This class of networks is paving the way for the deployment of innovative healthcare monitoring applications. In the past few years, much of the research in the area of body area networks has focused on issues related to wireless sensor designs, sensor miniaturization, low-power sensor circuitry, signal processing, and communications protocols. In this paper, we present an overview of body area networks, and a discussion of BAN communications types and their related issues. We provide a detailed investigation of sensor devices, physical layer, data link layer, and radio technology aspects of BAN research. We also present a taxonomy of BAN projects that have been introduced/proposed to date. Finally, we highlight some of the design challenges and open issues that still need to be addressed to make BANs truly ubiquitous for a wide range of applications.

Abstract: In military and rescue applications of mobile ad hoc networks, all the nodes belong to the same authority; therefore, they are motivated to cooperate in order to support the basic functions of the network In this paper, we consider the case when each node is its own authority and tries to maximize the benefits it gets from the network More precisely, we assume that the nodes are not willing to forward packets for the benefit of other nodes This problem may arise in civilian applications of mobile ad hoc networks In order to stimulate the nodes for packet forwarding, we propose a simple mechanism based on a counter in each node We study the behavior of the proposed mechanism analytically and by means of simulations, and detail the way in which it could be protected against misuse
