Abstract: Biographia Literaria" has emerged over the last century as a supreme work of literary criticism and one of the classics of English literature. Into this volume poured 20 years of speculation about the criticism and uses of poetry and about the psychology of art. Following the text of the 1817 edition, the editors offer the first completely annotated edition of the highly allusive work.

Abstract: A.C. Bradley put Shakespeare on the map for generations of readers and students for whom the plays might not otherwise have become \"real\" at all' writes John Bayley in his foreword to this edition of \"Shakespearean Tragedy: Lectures on Hamlet, Othello, King Lear and Macbeth\". Approaching the tragedies as drama, wondering about their characters as he might have wondered about people in novels or in life, Bradley is one of the most liberating in the line of distinguished Shakespeare critics. His acute yet undogmatic and almost conversational critical method has - despite fluctuations in fashion - remained enduringly popular and influential. For, as John Bayley observes, these lectures give us a true and exhilarating sense of 'the tragedies joining up with life, with all our lives; leading us into a perspective of possibilities that stretch forward and back in time, and in our total awareness of things.

Abstract: The Companion is a major contribution to the literary evaluation of Pound's great, but often bewildering and abstruse work, The Cantos. Available in a one-volume paperback edition for the first time, the Companion brings together in conveniently numbered glosses for each canto the most pertinent details from the vast body of work on the Cantos during the last thirty years. The Companion contains 10,421 separate glosses that include translations from eight languages, identification of all proper names and works, Pound's literary and historical allusions, and other exotica, with exegeses based upon Pound's sources. Also included is a supplementary bibliography of works on Pound, newly updated, and an alphabetized index to The Cantos.

Abstract: Aunque en Italia la imitacion como ejercicio literario formaba ya parte integrante de la preceptiva poetica, para los escritores castellanos del siglo XVI representaba una manera nueva de aproximarse tanto a los clasicos greco-latinos como a los italianos mas recientes. La "imitatio" enlaza a Espana con la actualidad circundante, y el renacimiento literario que resulta de su practica queda delineado no solo por su contexto geopolitico sino por su dinamica interna. El "Cinquecento" italiano tiene su base en la excelencia literaria que habian logrado anteriormente Petrarca y Boccaccio en el "Trecento"; la participacion de Espana en esa misma excelencia coincide, en parte, con una vision del pais como poder politico universal."

Abstract: L'education morale a travers la litterature dramatique (pp. 155-187): l'auteur dramatique explore la dimension \"comportement de societe\", lie a la mode et facilement controlable, du jeu| il laisse le spectateur tirer ses propres conclusions lorsque celui-ci tourne a la manie. Le jeu dans le roman (pp. 188-217): c'est surtout a partir de 1760 que les problemes moraux souleves par le jeu seront traites dans le roman, mais ceux-ci offrent rarement la persuasion subtile ou la variete et la concision des premiers. Meme s'il est le projet central d'une forme artistique, l'intention morale n'en est pas pour autant plus efficace que dans un traite de morale.
