Abstract: Newtonian scholars have long been aware of a set of draft Scholia to Propositions IV to IX of Book III of the Principia (2). These were composed in the 1690’s, as part of an unimplemented plan for a second edition of the work. Since they describe supposed anticipations of Newton’s doctrines in the thought of Graeco-Roman antiquity, they have become known as the ‘classical’ Scholia (3). The analogies and parallels drawn in them are so strained, as judged by modern standards of scholarship, that it is tempting to consider them as merely literary embellishments of a scientific work. However, the sheer bulk of the manuscripts, the number of copies and variants, their relation to Newton’s other writings, and the testimony of Newton’s associates together with their publication of some of the materials, all make it certain that he considered the arguments and conclusions of the Scholia an important part of his philosophy.

Abstract: The existence of microscopic organisms was discovered during the period 1665–83 by two Fellows of The Royal Society, Robert Hooke and Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. In Micrographia (1665), Hooke presented the first published depiction of a microrganism, the microfungus Mucor . Later, Leeuwenhoek observed and described microscopic protozoa and bacteria. These important revelations were made possible by the ingenuity of Hooke and Leeuwenhoek in fabricating and using simple microscopes that magnified objects from about 25–fold to 250–fold. After a lapse of more than 150 years, microscopy became the backbone of our understanding of the roles of microbes in the causation of infectious diseases and the recycling of chemical elements in the biosphere.

Abstract: I was very attracted by the title that Dr Iversen thought up for me. I have recalled many memories of the 1930’s in my efforts to recover the story of the Chemical-Electrical controversy that has apparently become legendary! But like all legends it needs checking by a little archival research; it was salutary to find that even my own memory was at fault! I have to be wary because there are present here many of those concerned in those memorable disputations, notably of course Wilhelm Feldberg, but also Marthe Vogt, Ulf von Euler, H. O. Schild, Hank Macintosh, and of course our chairman Z. M. Bacq. Naturally on this occasion I want to concentrate on the story as Dale told it in his many lectures.
