TL;DR: In this paper, the authors generalize and systematize basic experimental data on optical and luminescence properties of ZnO single crystals, thin films, powders, ceramics, and nanocrystals.
Abstract: We generalize and systematize basic experimental data on optical and luminescence properties of ZnO single crystals, thin films, powders, ceramics, and nanocrystals. We consider and study mechanisms by which two main emission bands occur, a short-wavelength band near the fundamental absorption edge and a broad long-wavelength band, the maximum of which usually lies in the green spectral range. We determine a relationship between the two luminescence bands and study in detail the possibility of controlling the characteristics of ZnO by varying the maximum position of the short-wavelength band. We show that the optical and luminescence characteristics of ZnO largely depend on the choice of the corresponding impurity and the parameters of the synthesis and subsequent treatment of the sample. Prospects for using zinc oxide as a scintillator material are discussed. Additionally, we consider experimental results that are of principal interest for practice.

TL;DR: In this article, a theory of the homogenization of a certain class of metamaterials is stated, and a more widespread method of determining the material parameters of met amaterials based on the extraction of the refractive index and the characteristic impedance from the scattering matrix of the plate of the metammaterial is discussed.
Abstract: A theory of the homogenization of a certain class of metamaterials is stated. These metamaterials are volume lattices of electric and magnetic dipoles that are resonant with frequencies that are considerably lower than that of the first Bragg resonance of the lattice. It was shown that, for plates of a metamaterial, which are described by bulk material parameters, transition layers play an important role, and the known Drude notion of transition layers is significantly revised. The paper also discusses a more widespread method of determining the material parameters of metamaterials based on the extraction of the refractive index and the characteristic impedance from the scattering matrix of the plate of the metamaterial. The physical meaning of the material parameters obtained in this way is clarified, and the concept of Bloch lattices related to it is discussed. It is shown that the bulk material parameters and the parameters of transition layers can also be extracted from components of the scattering matrix of plates.

TL;DR: In this article, simple explicit localized solutions are systematized over the whole space of a linear wave equation, which models the propagation of optical radiation in a linear approximation, and a similarity between these exact solutions and harmonic in time fields obtained in the paraxial approximation based on the Leontovich-Fock parabolic equation has been studied.
Abstract: Simple explicit localized solutions are systematized over the whole space of a linear wave equation, which models the propagation of optical radiation in a linear approximation. Much attention has been paid to exact solutions (which date back to the Bateman findings) that describe wave beams (including Bessel-Gauss beams) and wave packets with a Gaussian localization with respect to the spatial variables and time. Their asymptotics with respect to free parameters and at large distances are presented. A similarity between these exact solutions and harmonic in time fields obtained in the paraxial approximation based on the Leontovich-Fock parabolic equation has been studied. Higher-order modes are considered systematically using the separation of variables method. The application of the Bateman solutions of the wave equation to the construction of solutions to equations with dispersion and nonlinearity and their use in wavelet analysis, as well as the summation of Gaussian beams, are discussed. In addition, solutions localized at infinity known as the Moses-Prosser “acoustic bullets”, as well as their harmonic in time counterparts, “X waves”, waves from complex sources, etc., have been considered. Everywhere possible, the most elementary mathematical formalism is used.
