Abstract: Herein, we report the synthesis of 48 novel 3-sulfonylamides containing a tricyclic thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-one moiety, and their influence on melanin synthesis in murine B16 cells. All target sulfonylamides were synthesized through key intermediate 3-nitro-thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4(3H)-ones using three types of ipso-nitration reactions. In this case, we converted the pyrido[1,2-a]- fragment of the thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine moiety to pyrrolo[1,2-a]- and azepino[1,2-a]- side-rings in order to evaluate the bioactivities of the synthesized derivatives for a structure activity-relationships point of view. The obtained results suggest that some of the selected compounds revealed a promising influence on melanin synthesis in murine B16 cells and may serve as lead compounds for further drug discovery and development.

Abstract: GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT ABSTRACT ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized and used as recyclable magnetic catalyst in the solvent-free conversion of different epoxides to vicinal hydroxythiocyanates with NH4SCN at room temperature. The reactions were carried out by grinding in a mortar with perfect regioselectivity within short times (2-25 min) and with high to excellent yields (75–95%). The nanocatalyst was separated easily using an external magnet and reused for four consecutive cycles without any noticeable loss of efficiency or magnetic property.

Abstract: Magnesiothermic reduction of silica is a powerful method for producing silicon owing to its simplicity, low reduction temperature and low production cost. However, the inevitable formation of magnesium silicide (Mg2Si) limits the use of this method. A new approach was developed in this research to prevent the formation of Mg2Si by using alumina as a consumer of gaseous magnesium. Utilizing this approach, highly pure silicon was produced by firstly purifying the silica regent by acid-leaching. It was then subjected to magnesiothermic reduction regimes in order to optimize the power input and molar Mg/SiO2 ratio to minimize Mg2Si production. Silicon products were analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and quantitative Rietveld refinement. Optimum electrical power and molar ratio were found to be 3.75 kW and 2.25:1, respectively.
