TL;DR: This study believes that a PON based on polling, with data encapsulated in Ethernet frames, possesses the best qualities, such as dynamic bandwidth distribution, use of a single downstream and a single upstream wavelength, ability to provision a fractional wavelength capacity to each user, and ease of adding a new user.
Abstract: While in recent years backbone bandwidth has experienced substantial growth, little has changed in the access network. “Last mile” still remains the bottleneck between a high capacity LAN or home network and the backbone. Passive optical network (PON) is a technology viewed by many as an attractive solution to this problem. In this study, we discuss and evaluate design issues for PON access networks. Specifically, to drive the cost of an access network down, it is very important to have an efficient, scalable solution. We believe that a PON based on polling, with data encapsulated in Ethernet frames, possesses the best qualities, such as dynamic bandwidth distribution, use of a single downstream and a single upstream wavelength, ability to provision a fractional wavelength capacity to each user, and ease of adding a new user. To support dynamic bandwidth distribution, we propose an interleaved polling algorithm. We then suggest a scheme for in-band signaling that allows using a single wavelength for both downstream data and control message transmission. To obtain realistic simulation results, we generated synthetic traffic that exhibits the properties of self-similarity and long-range dependence. We then analyzed the network performance and its effect on various types of traffic, e.g., best-effort data traffic, VBR video traffic and CBR streams.

TL;DR: This study proposes the design and analysis of a PON architecture which has an excellent performance-to-cost ratio and discusses the possibility of improving the bandwidth utilization by means of timeslot size adjustment, and by packet scheduling.
Abstract: With the expansion of services offered over the Internet, the “last mile” bottleneck problems continue to exacerbate. A passive optical network (PON) is a technology viewed by many as an attractive solution to this problem. In this study, we propose the design and analysis of a PON architecture which has an excellent performance-to-cost ratio. This architecture uses the time-division multiplexing (TDM) approach to deliver data encapsulated in Ethernet packets from a collection of optical network units (ONUs) to a central optical line terminal (OLT) over the PON access network. The OLT, in turn, is connected to the rest of the Internet. A simulation model is used to analyze the system’s performance such as bounds on packets delay and queue occupancy. Then, we discuss the possibility of improving the bandwidth utilization by means of timeslot size adjustment, and by packet scheduling.

TL;DR: This work proposes reference power consumption values for Internet protocol/multiprotocol label switching, Ethernet, optical transport networking and wavelength division multiplexing equipment and presents a simplified analytical power consumption model that can be used for large networks where simulation is computationally expensive or unfeasible.
Abstract: The evaluation of and reduction in energy consumption of backbone telecommunication networks has been a popular subject of academic research for the last decade. A critical parameter in these studies is the power consumption of the individual network devices. It appears that across different studies, a wide range of power values for similar equipment is used. This is a result of the scattered and limited availability of power values for optical multilayer network equipment. We propose reference power consumption values for Internet protocol/multiprotocol label switching, Ethernet, optical transport networking and wavelength division multiplexing equipment. In addition we present a simplified analytical power consumption model that can be used for large networks where simulation is computationally expensive or unfeasible. For illustration and evaluation purpose, we apply both calculation approaches to a case study, which includes an optical bypass scenario. Our results show that the analytical model approximates the simulation result to over 90% or higher and that optical bypass potentially can save up to 50% of power over a non-bypass scenario.

TL;DR: In this paper, some network topologies for such a pan-European fiber-optic backbone network are presented and a distinction is made between different recovery options in the optical layer for the different traffic types considered.
Abstract: The traffic to be carried by today's European backbone networks increases very rapidly. An important portion of this traffic consists of data traffic (mainly IP-related). In the future data traffic is expected to become the abundantly dominant traffic type, while voice traffic will only account for a very small portion of the total traffic volume. In this paper, some network topologies for such a pan-European fiber-optic backbone network are presented (more details can be found in [1]). These topologies are compared in terms of the efficiency of the network design both from a cost and capacity point of view and in terms of the availability of the connections routed over this network. In order to be able to assess the network topologies under realistic circumstances, the expected traffic demand is forecasted. This enables to make the comparison for the current traffic volume as well as for the traffic patterns of the future. As not all types of (data) traffic require the same degree of survivability and in order to leverage the total capacity cost of the network design, a distinction is made between different recovery options in the optical layer for the different traffic types considered.

TL;DR: This study addresses an off-line RSA problem in which enough spectrum needs to be allocated for each demand of a given traffic matrix and presents novel integer lineal programming (ILP) formulations of RSA that are based on the assignment of channels.
Abstract: Flexgrid optical networks are attracting huge interest due to their higher spectrum efficiency and flexibility in comparison with traditional wavelength switched optical networks based on the wavelength division multiplexing technology. To properly analyze, design, plan, and operate flexible and elastic networks, efficient methods are required for the routing and spectrum allocation (RSA) problem. Specifically, the allocated spectral resources must be, in absence of spectrum converters, the same along the links in the route (the continuity constraint) and contiguous in the spectrum (the contiguity constraint). In light of the fact that the contiguity constraint adds huge complexity to the RSA problem, we introduce the concept of channels for the representation of contiguous spectral resources. In this paper, we show that the use of a pre-computed set of channels allows considerably reducing the problem complexity. In our study, we address an off-line RSA problem in which enough spectrum needs to be allocated for each demand of a given traffic matrix. To this end, we present novel integer lineal programming (ILP) formulations of RSA that are based on the assignment of channels. The evaluation results reveal that the proposed approach allows solving the RSA problem much more efficiently than previously proposed ILP-based methods and it can be applied even for realistic problem instances, contrary to previous ILP formulations.
