TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present the characteristic features of Spanish library and information science journals, both their information quality as means of communication and the quality of the editorial process is analyzed.
Abstract: After presenting the characteristic features of Spanish library and information science journals, both their information quality as means of communication and the quality of the editorial process is analysed. The characteristic profile of the Spanish LIS journal is that of a young journal, under the auspices of a LIS professional association or university unit, published in Madrid, of long periodicity (annual/biannual), of general scope and audience, and with a consolidated editorial structure although not professionalised which is also medium-sized, recruited locally and preferably of academic affiliation. In general, Spanish LIS journals do not comply with international standards pertaining to scientific publication. Their main deficiencies are: lack of detailed instructions to authors; lack of information on manuscript selection and evaluation processes; missing translations of titles, abstracts and keywords; missing dates of receipt, acceptance and publication of originals. The editorial process presents important gaps insofar as publication dates are disregarded, author instructions are not followed, the system for manuscript revision and evaluation is not rigorous in the least, a system for the control, auditing and selfevaluation of journals is not in place and the management of the editorial process is very little professionalised. To conclude, a number of specific measures for improvement are offered.

TL;DR: The research confirms that a formal approach to competitive intelligence, rather than informal or discontinuous approaches, gives businesses of all sizes competitive advantage, and justifies the value of its implementation by Spanish exporters.
Abstract: This article analyses the results of a survey among Spanish exporters, and the experiences of four organisations implementing a formal competitive intelligence programme. The research confirms that a formal approach to competitive intelligence, rather than informal or discontinuous approaches, gives businesses of all sizes competitive advantage, and justifies the value of its implementation by Spanish exporters. However, competitive intelligence as a business discipline remains largely unknown and misunderstood in Spain, and few organisations implement systematic programmes to benefit from the intelligence effort. To reach this conclusion the article offers a view of the information needs of Spanish exporters, the use of different intelligence techniques, and the main obstacles they find when implementing formal intelligence systems.

TL;DR: This paper analyses the preservation strategies applied to date and reflects upon the methodological underpinnings of these strategies, current trends and future viability, and proposes appraisal schedules as the main tools for defining an electronic records preservation policy.
Abstract: The idea of long term preservation of electronic records has been present since the early days of the computer revolution. However, there have been few documented experiences of creating digital archives, mainly due to the difficulty of finding technical solutions to the problems of obsolescence, high costs and a lack of institutions able to assume this responsibility. This paper begins by analysing the preservation strategies applied to date and reflecting upon the methodological underpinnings of these strategies, current trends and future viability. Next it presents two options for identifying electronic records and defining their limits, a necessary step prior to applying any preservation strategy. Finally it describes how archival appraisal can facilitate this identification process and proposes appraisal schedules as the main tools for defining an electronic records preservation policy.

TL;DR: Different business information systems models coexist and do not exclude one another although a significant sector of information professionals has not adapted to the changes, with the result being that their sphere of influence is being lost to professionals in other areas.
Abstract: The evolution of information characteristics and needs within businesses over the years has involved not just the creation of different information systems but also the continuous adaptation of the information professional's profile. The traditional business library model has been followed by business documentation centers, business information centers, virtual business libraries, competitive intelligence centers and, now, knowledge management centers. The acknowledgement of the strategic importance of knowledge management and intellectual capital in businesses has become the latest phase in the evolution of information management. Different business information systems models coexist and do not exclude one another although a significant sector of information professionals has not adapted to the changes, with the result being that their sphere of influence is being lost to professionals in other areas.
