TL;DR: The analysis and integration of behavioral units as discussed by the authors is a collection of papers given at a conference in honor of Kenneth MacCorquodale's 65th birthday, with the focus on behavior analysis.
Abstract: Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1987, Vol 32(6), 505–506. Reviews the book, Analysis and Integration of Behavioral Units edited by Travis Thompson and Michael D. Zeiler (1986). This book contains papers given at a conference in honor of Kenneth MacCorquodale's 65th birthday. This volume is far more than just the report of a conference. The central theme, the behavioral unit, is basic to psychology as a science. In an introductory chapter, Zeiler compares it with atomic theory in physics and cell theory in biology. Meazzini and Ricci review the history of the old molar-molecular distinction and find it irrelevant and sterile in extracting useful units of analysis from the continuous but often turbulent flow that behavior is. Readers who are not behavior analysts may be surprised by the breadth of many of the discussions, and in that respect, the book will help to correct the belief that behavior analysts are narrow. TL;DR: Monte as mentioned in this paper provides thorough reviews of most of the standard personality theories, with particular emphasis on the depth theories that penetrate “beneath the mask.” Innovations include recent revisionist trends in psychoanalysis and a full account of radical behaviorism.

The author provides thorough reviews of most of the standard personality theories, with particular emphasis on the depth theories that penetrate “beneath the mask.” Innovations include recent revisionist trends in psychoanalysis and a full account of radical behaviorism. The text appears to take a no-nonsense approach to exposition and does not sacrifice substance for style. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Elliott et al. as discussed by the authors presented a clear and concise critique of prominent social explanations of delinquency and provided a sophisticated test of their theoretical perspective with panel data on a national sample of youths.
Abstract: Originally published in Contemporary Psychology: APA Review of Books, 1987, Vol 32(1), 71–72. Reviews the book, Explaining Delinquency and Drug Use by Delbert S. Elliott, David Huizinga, and Suzanne S. Ageton (1985). Explaining Delinquency and Drug Use contains the best in contemporary sociological research on the causes of delinquent conduct. The authors present a clear and concise critique of prominent social explanations of delinquency and provide a sophisticated test of their theoretical perspective with panel data on a national sample of youths. The book is not without flaws. The relation between involvement in delinquency and bonding to delinquent peers is less than clear. Involvement with delinquent peers is both a cause and an effect of delinquency. Also, the book's title is misleading, and readers who expect a separate and detailed explanation of drug use might be disappointed. Despite the few quibbles, anyone looking for a well-articulated theory of delinquency will not be disappointed in this book. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
