Abstract: This paper presents and critically discusses the features of the two main approaches currently in use for materiais management and production administration: the traditional "just-in-case" philosophyand the "just-in-time" philosophy. In addition, it discusses the classical forms of operationalization of these philosophies, focusing on the main changes to be introduced in a "just-in-case" organized factory in arder to transform it into a "just-in- time" organized factory. Finally, it briefly discusses some applications of the "just-in-time" philosophy and their practical results in brazilian industries.

Abstract: This paper deals with the way organizations are managed by those who work at the top. It has been clearer each day that it is not a question of a "rational" process as most of the literature about this subject claims. Actually the orientations, the decisions and actions assumed by thoee managers clearly express their personal marks that are born in a whole of desires, convictions, preferences and particular interests that describe quite well their unique personalities as executives. The paper refutes the nai"ve belief that "good administration", "good decisions" or "good resulte" achieved by the organizations are necessarily the consequence of the simple use of procedures detached from the personal characteristics of the manager himself.

The classical literature in industrial sociology is examined in the light of accident research and the case study. These reflections lead to a sociological theorization of accident produciion. The vast majority of industrial accidents are seen as being produced by social relations at three leoels in the firm: organization, command and rewards.

Abstract: The traditional financiaI analysis supposes that the company will be closed in a short period of time and, arbitrarilly, classifies the so calIed liquidity ratios in pre-established standards. Though these ratios are easy to be calculated it is mandatory that the users be aware of the Static condition of the information and that the liabilities will be paid by the funds produced by using the various assets and not by its liquidation. The [inancial ratios has been overvalued as an efficient tool for bankruptcy forecast but lately the cash flow has been considered as a better tool in forecasting the financiai problems of companies.

Abstract: This research presents an analysis of top management's perception in U.S. MNCs of corporate social responsibility programs, from a general survey of 18 home offices (29 respondents) and a focus survey of four selected firms (33 respondents, 17 from home and 16 from overseas). The firms figure among FORTUNE 500, each with annual sales exceeâing US$ one billion, in manufacturing, processing, and extractive sectors. The material focuses on MNCs decision- making process. Data were collected during 1982-1983. Some major findings are: strategic management of social responsibility programs for MNCs internaI publics is found, although models are not very systematic; resources are committed, although somewhat constrained due to costs considerations; such programs lay behind those in marketing and pro duction; threats from externaI and internaI environ ments exert changes on strategic management processes, the biggest coming from employees and labor groups; among others.

Abstract: This paper reviews the Autorregressive - Moving Average Models and compares them with the traditional methods known by the term "technical analysis". The Box-Jenkins approach is presented next and its four steps - ldentification, Estimation, Checking and Forecasting - are reviewed. Finally, it is shown how this technique is easily implemented with satisfactory results in the modelling and forecasting of the lndex of the Bolsa de Valores de Sao Paulo (BOVESPA).

Abstract: The object of this paper is to discuss some aspects of the concept of skill, the analysis of which is based upon observed work relations in some textile mills in Minas Gerais, Brazil. One notices some hesitation in embracing the iâea of qualification and adopting new technology in the industry. Rational policies based on high iurnouer raies, low skills and low wage rates haue been used as a means of control aver the labor class. But they also imply poor quality of the final product which remains below the externai markei requiremenis, thus reducing competitive power. Because some aspects of skiU anâ know how can not be easily codified or transferred to neweomers, they require a long period of practice living close to the production line.

Abstract: This paper examined the impact of automation on the accounting professionals, associated the bureaucratic process within society. lt analyzed possible changes in tasks, job content, and required skills. The study is based on survey data which indica te that bureaucratization has a significant influence upon accounting professions, reducing autonomy. Technology as such does not determine changes in professional tasks, but when connected with bureaucratization may be used as a control tool for accounting professions.

Abstract: This paper discusses a number of issues arising from the unilateral suspension of exiernal debt seroice with special reference to the recent experience of Brasil It begins by briefly examining some of the factors that may lead a country to default and by arguing that a suspension of payments may be instrumental in protecting the leoel of a country's foreign exchange reserves, as well as in creating the necessary conditions for a lasting solution to the debt servicing problems that have emerged in the 1980's It goes on to outline a stratezy for unilateral debt securitization and to discuss the possible eftects of unilateral actions on the pari of a debtor country such as Brazil This paper also discusses the reasons that make massive creditor refalation unlikely and some of the measures that a defaulting debtor may take in order to reâuce the risk of disruption associated with unilateral action

Abstract: In this paper the authors present a longitudinal study about the use of Decision Support Systems Generators in a Budgeting processo The study comprises: 1. analysis of the userfriendliness concept of a generator; 2. analysis of the development process of DSS using generators; e 3. analysis of the support provided by the DSS to the decision process. Some suggestions for future development of DSS generators are also presented.
