Abstract: This article discusses some of the factors that are limiting rail as a means of freight transportation. The current model in which freight rail operators are interested only in moving large volumes of bulk commodities over long distances is limiting rail's ability to penetrate growing markets and will constrain rail's competitive ability. There is a need for a massive change in terms of train technology, asset management and the integration of the train planning process. Smaller, faster and more flexible train formations offer significant potential advantages over big heavy trains. It is suggested that a different approach to the management of infrastructure could better accommodate very short term traffic. To meet the demands of a changing market, the rail sector must step outside its long time span position of product development and service life of its mobile assets.

TL;DR: In this article, a survey of business and leisure passengers on their awareness and use of the wireless technology on the train was carried out, and 30% of respondents were aware of wi-fi, were planning to use it, or had used it on train, indicating a good level of awareness.
Abstract: Many train operating companies in the UK have started to offer wi-fi on their trains. This article highlights findings from a recent survey of business and leisure passengers on their awareness and use of the wireless technology. Findings showed that 30% of respondents were aware of wi-fi, were planning to use it or had used it on the train, indicating a good level of awareness. The main reason given for not using wi-fi on the train was not having a laptop. About 40% of travelers stated that they did not need to use the service on this particular journey. Most respondents indicated that they preferred traveling by train rather than air, and very few would switch away from the train because of improved communication methods in flight. These findings suggest that onboard wi-fi is an enhancement to existing passenger service.

TL;DR: A contract for a new fleet of trains for Thameslink is expected to be signed in Summer 2009, and the first trains should be in service in 2012, with the entire fleet in service by 2015.
Abstract: A contract for a new fleet of trains for Thameslink is expected to be signed in Summer 2009. There will be 1,100 carriages in the new fleet, which is 380 more than at present. This article discusses what the new trains may look like. Passenger discussion groups have accepted the reality that many passengers will not have room to sit, and thus prefer a design that will allow passengers to stand as comfortably and safely as possible. Passengers have voiced strong objections to designs that include three seats side-by-side because of the awkwardness of accessing the inside seats. Two-plus-two seating is preferred even if it means that more passengers have to stand. The passengers had high expectations for the provision of on-train passenger information. Closed-circuit television cameras will be installed in every carriage to alleviate security concerns. Because these trains serve airports, proper provision for luggage racks is also seen as important, even at the expense of seating space. The passenger expectations will be incorporated into the final design. The first trains should be in service in 2012, with the entire fleet in service by 2015.
