Abstract: One of the subject-definitive aims of philosophy is to facilitate an understanding of our human condition in the world’s scheme of things. This calls for a concern not only for what is, but also for what is not—or at any rate not yet. And in this regard deliberations regarding our eventual posterity are bound to raise difficult and troublesome questions throughout the entire range of philosophical concern, alike in metaphysics, in the theory of knowledge, in ethics, in philosophical anthropology, and elsewhere.
