TL;DR: In this article, a surface treatment method Abrasion and attrition (AB&AT) was employed for removing contaminants, such as dust, asphalt film and agglomerated particles.
Abstract: The presence of dust, asphalt film and agglomerated particles is considered to be the primary reason for reducing the properties of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP)-inclusive concrete. A surface treatment method Abrasion and Attrition (AB&AT) was employed for removing these contaminants. Gaps were identified from the available literatures and efforts have been made to bridge them in order to increase the usage of RAP aggregates in concrete pavements. Six mixes were prepared by partly replacing the Natural Aggregates (NA) with RAP aggregates in different proportions. It was learnt that processing Dirty RAP (DRAP) aggregates by the AB&AT method could remove contaminants considerably as a result of which stronger bonding is exhibited at the interface of the aggregate and hydrated mortar matrix. Incorporation of beneficiated RAP aggregates in concrete improved the workability considerably but it was found to have reduced hardened concrete properties. However, the results were found to lie within the permissib...

TL;DR: In this paper, the strength and microstructural properties of a geopolymer stabilised soft soil (SS) using palm oil fuel ash (POFA) as a precursor were presented.
Abstract: This paper presents the strength and microstructural properties of a geopolymer stabilised soft soil (SS) using palm oil fuel ash (POFA) as a precursor. The liquid alkaline activator, L used was a mixture of sodium silicate solution (Na2SiO3) and sodium hydroxide solution (NaOH). Compressive strengths were measured to assess the viability of POFA-SS geopolymer as a stabilised subgrade. Specialised tests were undertaken on POFA-SS geopolymers to investigate the geopolymerisation mechanisms under various Na2SiO3:NaOH ratio, L content and POFA:SS ratio. These specialised tests included; X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy tests. The lower POFA:SS ratios required more NaOH and L to be absorbed by both external and internal negative layer surfaces of SS to develop the stabilised soil structure. The optimum Na2SiO3:NaOH ratios providing the highest strength were at 40:60, 50:50, and 60:40 for POFA:...

TL;DR: In this article, a one-third scale accelerated pavement testing device is used to simulate the cyclic traffic loading on two geometrically scaled flexible pavements representing typical collector roadways and interstate highways.
Abstract: Pavement structure typically consists of an asphalt concrete or concrete surface layer, underlying granular layers (subbase and/or base) and compacted subgrade soil layer. During wet seasons when the subgrade becomes saturated, cyclic traffic loading may result in pumping of fine particles from the subgrade up into the granular layer, which may lead to failure of the pavement. The objective of this research is to investigate occurrence of migration of fines and to determine the magnitude and rate of such migration. A one-third scale accelerated pavement testing device is utilised to simulate the cyclic traffic loading on two geometrically scaled flexible pavements representing typical collector roadways and interstate highways. The pavement sections are constructed on partially saturated aggregate subbase overlying non-plastic saturated silt as subgrade. The lab testing reveals that, under cyclic loading conditions, a considerable amount of fines migrated into the subbase. The subgrade fines migration in ...

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of RAP as a constituent in RCA, on its characteristic properties as an unbound pavement material were investigated and the results showed that the presence of the RAP up to 15% was not significantly affected on the physical properties of RCA.
Abstract: The use of recycled concrete aggregates (RCAs) as an unbound pavement material is a perfect alternative to effectively manage the construction and demolition (C&D) wastes. However, the presence of constituents in RCA is led for inconsistent properties. The reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) material is one of the major constituents that can be mixed at the recycling process of demolished concrete. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the effects of RAP as a constituent in RCA, on its characteristic properties as an unbound pavement material. To achieve the objectives of the study, five RCA samples were produced by mixing different percentages of RAP by weight. A series of standard laboratory tests were conducted on each sample. The results were then compared with the properties of standard granular pavement materials specified by Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads (QDTMR), Australia. The analysis depicted that the presence of RAP as a constituent in RCA up to 15% was not significantly affected on the physical properties of RCA as an unbound pavement material.
