Abstract: In an effort to measure in-house use of music periodicals, a citation study based on bibliographies in theses and dissertations was conducted at the Indiana University Music Library A total of 256 titles were cited, but only 30% were cited more than once While the periodical literature cited by musicologists has a low rate of obsolescence, the periodicals cited by theorists and educators becomes obsolete at a rapid rate, making the rate of obsolescence for the field as a whole, fairly high, unlike other subject areas in the humanities

TL;DR: This paper shows how the performance of subscription agents may be more accurately judged by recording the number of "chasers" sent for missing issues over a period of time and calculating thenumber of chasers per journal issue for every agent.
Abstract: This paper shows how the performance of subscription agents may be more accurately judged by recording the number of "chasers" sent for missing issues over a period of time and calculating the number of chasers per journal issue for every agent. Results obtained during 1979 and 1981 are compared and discussed to provide the basis of an on-going survey.

TL;DR: All of the periodicals examined are found to be lacking in many information items but nevertheless providing useful papers and deserving larger readerships than they now have.
Abstract: This paper examines five periodicals and two continuations against a set of about sixty criteria under three headings: journal information, circulation information, and paper information. It finds all of them to be lacking in many information items but nevertheless providing useful papers and deserving larger readerships than they now have. Serials representing India, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Taiwan are included.

Abstract: A study was made of currently received periodical titles which had no evidence of use during two years. It was assumed that there would be fewer periodicals not used than used, and those in this category were selected for detailed analysis. Variables were recorded for each title, keypunched, and the data was summarized via a computer program. Benefits of the study were: 1) candidates for cancellation were identified; 2) tabulated results were useful for faculty review; 3) areas needing further study were identified.

TL;DR: The study concludes that telefacsimile can be justified for its capability to meet urgent needs but that these are infrequent and good planning and monitoring are essential.
Abstract: An experimental telefacsimile network of four nodes is described. Slow-speed equipment at four branches of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries was used to transmit journal articles to speed delivery. The study concludes that telefacsimile can be justified for its capability to meet urgent needs but that these are infrequent. Good planning and monitoring are essential.

TL;DR: By examining the source of materials shelved over a one year period, it was found that in-house use accounted for more than half of the shelving workload.
Abstract: By examining the source of materials shelved over a one year period, it was found that in-house use accounted for more than half of the shelving workload. The degree to which browsing affected this use is considered in relation to the cost of maintaining open stacks. These costs are analyzed and a prescription for controlling the size of open stack collections is suggested.

TL;DR: The present and future relationship between the library and subscription agency is considered with particular emphasis on new technology and the electronic publication and delivery of literature.
Abstract: The present and future relationship between the library and subscription agency is considered with particular emphasis on new technology and the electronic publication and delivery of literature. Change if viewed as a process dedicated to the destruction of the status quo is to be feared; but when accepted as a natural process, is simply one constant element in the world of libraries and subscription agents.

TL;DR: The Summer 1982 issue of SERIALS REVIEW carried an editorial by Nancy J. Melin entitled "New Subscription Agency Giants: Lower or Higher Costs?" that editorial suggested that the recent acquisitions of Moore-Cottrell by EBSCO Subscription Services, and both Turner and Stechen-MacMillan by F. W. Faxon Co, should be "a cause for great concern by serials librarians." She predicted a resulting reduction in the variety of services available, less competition between the leading firms, and an increase in service charges RE
Abstract: The Summer 1982 issue of SERIALS REVIEW carried an editorial by Nancy J. Melin entitled, "New Subscription Agency Giants: Lower or Higher Costs?" That editorial suggested that the recent acquisitions of Moore-Cottrell by EBSCO Subscription Services, and both Turner and Stechen-MacMillan by F. W. Faxon Co., should be "a cause for great concern by serials librarians." She predicted a resulting reduction in the variety of services available, less competition between the leading firms, and an increase in service charges. These pessimistic conclusions are not only contrary to known facts, but are unfair to the integrity of the leading subscription agencies, prompting this clarifying response.

TL;DR: The 1981 ALA Statement on Professional Ethics differs significantly from previous statements, which were, by and large, neglected as discussed by the authors and has been used by librarians in the development of more specific approaches to ethical or professional library service.
Abstract: The 1981 ALA Statement on Professional Ethics differs significantly from previous statements, which were, by and large, neglected. In recent years, particularly since 1975, more interest has been shown by librarians in the development of a meaningful statement which speaks in a practical way to services they provide. The purpose of this article is to encourage reference to the 1981 Statement as a point of departure in developing more specific approaches to ethical or professional library service. The specific approaches work themselves out in the areas of competency, business affairs, loyalty, and interpersonal relations.

TL;DR: The University of British Columbia Library's Government Publications Division has developed an automated serials system capable of merging with theserials system in use for the library as a whole, and transition to an automated check-in system.
Abstract: The University of British Columbia Library's Government Publications Division has developed an automated serials system capable of merging with the serials system in use for the library as a whole. The objectives of the project were: inclusion of government publications on computerized lists on microfiche for processing and reference; and transition to an automated check-in system. A major barrier to integration of the systems was the differing approach to entry: full government hierarchy vs. title entry or AACR. The project was undertaken under the guidance of the library's Systems Division and in close co-operation with the Serials Division. The automated government serials record included a corporate body authority file and a bibliographic file, which eventually merged with the central serials bibliographic file; the non-bibliographic data going into a parallel management file. Information on all current serials holdings, including holdings of uncatalogued documents, is available campus-wide via termin...
