Abstract: Is there a core of psychology journals that will satisfy most needs of undergraduate psychology students? The authors examined journal citations of 105 senior psychology theses written durin a seven-year period at a major research university and a small liberal arts college. relatively few journal titles accounted for most of the citations at each institution. The research university students did not cite more journal titles and articles than did the liberal arts college students. Nevertheless, beyond the most heavily cited journals, the students from each institution cited in common relatively few journals. With improved faculty guidance, a small number of journals could satisfy most needs of undergraduate psychology students at both institutions.

TL;DR: In order to assess the value of the new Christian Science Monitor to library users, a comparison was made of representative issues from before and after January 3.
Abstract: On November 14, 1988 the editor, managing editor, and assistant managing editor of the Christian Science Monitor resigned because of changes to be made in the newspaper. January 3, 1989 marked the debut of the new Christian Science Monitor. In order to assess the value of the new paper to library users, a comparison was made of representative issues from before and after January 3. The number of articles per issue, the geographic spread of the articles, the subjects of the feature articles, and the number of nonstaff writers were compared. In addition the new paper's delivery pattern, subscription price, indexing, and inclusion of specific features were investigated. The findings are presented as a conversation between the author and a librarian.

TL;DR: The use of 145 preselected probable low-use serial titles was measured in the library at Oregon State University for three separate quarters as discussed by the authors, and the recorded use for individual titles varied considerably among quarters, with the ratio of standard deviation to average use per quarter decreasing erratically.
Abstract: The use of 145 preselected probable low-use serial titles was measured in Ken Library at Oregon State University for three separate quarters. Student reshelvers recorded each use of bound volumes and unbound issues as the items were reshelved. Internal checks suggested that reshelved items were recorded accurately, but that approximately one third of the uses were not recorded. Reshelving by users could explain the discrepancy. Recorded use for individual titles varied considerably among quarters, with the ratio of standard deviation to average use per quarter decreasing erratically from an average greater than one at very low use values to an average of much less than one at higher use. The need for a continuous survey period of at least one year was demonstrated.

TL;DR: The Reference Department of the Van Pelt Library at the University of Pennsylvania currently has subscriptions to six serial indexes and/or abstracting services on compact disc as mentioned in this paper, which represents a substantial commitment of funds from the serials acquisitions budget for products that are already present in the reference collection in paper form.
Abstract: The Reference Department of the Van Pelt Library at the University of Pennsylvania currently has subscriptions to six serial indexes and/or abstracting services on compact disc. These are: ERIC and PsycLIT from SilverPlatter and Reader's Guide, Social Sciences Index, Humanities Index, and the MLA Annual Bibliography from H.W. Wilson. An additional index, PAIS International, is on order. Furthermore, a serial bibliography, Brodart's CD version of the Monthly Catalog, Le Pac: Government Documents Option, is also available. This array represents a substantial commitment of funds from the serials acquisitions budget for products that are already present in the reference collection in paper form. Additional funds from the library's current expenditures budget have gone for equipment; and there are, of course, ongoing expenses for paper, ink cartridges, and maintenance. Why did the library choose to duplicate these reference tools, especially since Penn already offered inexpensive, convenient, online search ser...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the subject coverage of a core of general journals with that in specialty journals in six areas: algebra, combinatorics, differential equations, geometry, mathematical logic, and topology.
Abstract: Mathematics literature is characterized by a great number of general subject journals, which publish in all areas of mathematics, and a relatively small number of specialty journals. This study compares the subject coverage of a core of general journals with that in specialty journals in six areas: algebra, combinatorics, differential equations, geometry, mathematical logic, and topology. In four of these sub-disciplines, the core general journals provided greater subject coverage than the specialty journals dedicated to the fields. Libraries not supporting strong research or curricular interests in these specialties can still develop collections that represent each subject area by subscribing to just the core general journals.

TL;DR: The results of a periodicals use study in a medium-sized public library reveal that most of the information needs of the public library patron can be met by using materials published within the last five years.
Abstract: The results of a periodicals use study in a medium-sized public library reveal that most of the information needs of the public library patron can be met by using materials published within the last five years, with newspapers forming a large percentage of the publications requested. The identification of appropriate sources is heavily dependent upon the use and availability of indexed materials.

TL;DR: It is reached that an online public access catalog that includes serial locations and holdings will further improve serial accessibility and relieve user frustration.
Abstract: A number of articles have dealt with the frustration that users have in locating books but few have concentrated on problems experienced in retrieving periodical issues. User studies conducted by Murfin and Hanson and Serebnick are discussed, and their findings analyzed. The complexity of serial files, the problems experienced in using them and the frequent lack of adequate serials public service are mentioned. The need for a separate serials information desk, staffed with well-trained people able to handle all kinds of serials questions, is emphasized. The University of Oklahoma's experience with a Current Periodicals/Microforms Room is used as an example. The conclusion is reached that an online public access catalog that includes serial locations and holdings will further improve serial accessibility and relieve user frustration.

TL;DR: The ubiquitousness and relatively low cost of comic books, combined with their proven socio-historical, recreational, and educational value render them a highly desirable commodity in libraries, archives, and classroom collections as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: The ubiquitousness and relatively low cost of comic books, combined with their proven socio-historical, recreational, and educational value, render them a highly desirable commodity in libraries, archives, and classroom collections. The article offers practical guidelines for the evaluation and acquisition of these materials. A concise history of the field and many useful appendices (e.g., bestseller lists, a bibliography, a breakdown of currently issued titles) have been included.

TL;DR: This article explores why this is so under the following headings: problems of language and translation; the absence of subscription information in the most popular North American selection tools: and problems resulting from how journals are distributed within the PRC itself.
Abstract: There are currently about fifty-five library and information science journals being published in the People's Republic of China. Few are available to the North American library user. This article explores why this is so under the following headings: (1) problems of language and translation; (2) the absence of subscription information in the most popular North American selection tools: and (3) problems resulting from how journals are distributed within the PRC itself. In addition, names, addresses and other subscription information are provided, as well as a semi-critical analysis at both the collective and individual journal levels.

TL;DR: A sample of Australian journals in the natural and social sciences has been analyzed with regard to their editorial procedures, costs, revenues, marketing, production methods and general well-being as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: A sample of Australian journals in the natural and social sciences has been analysed with regard to their editorial procedures, costs, revenues, marketing, production methods and general well-being. The analysis shows that many scholarly journals have problems with management, marketing and distribution, and do not cover their costs. Most journals are increasingly subsidized by members of their parent societies or from other sources, and their longer-term future is unclear. The separation in most societies of the editing function from the policy and financial functions is thought to contribute to this situation, which in many cases is simply not yet recognized by those closest to it.

TL;DR: EBSCO-CD is a versatile reference and serials management tool; it provides multiple access points to EBSCO's database without incurring online charges; and users may design customized outputs.
Abstract: Librarians may choose from print, online and CDROM formats when purchasing EBSCO's Serials Directory. Subject. access to serials titles and extensive bibliographic descriptions give the print and CD-ROM formats particular value as reference tools. Bibliographic authority, currency, access points and user aids for all three formats meet high standards. While each format has unique advantages depending on a library's size, mission and budget, the preferred choice for many libraries is EBSCO-CD. It is a versatile reference and serials management tool; it provides multiple access points to EBSCO's database without incurring online charges; and users may design customized outputs.
