TL;DR: In this article, the authors ranked journals in library and information science by the number of mentions they received in 131 course reading lists at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Abstract: Journals in library and information science were ranked by the number of mentions they received in 131 course reading lists at the Graduate School of Library and Information Science, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and by the number of times cited in doctoral dissertations and in faculty publications. The iournals were also ranked by scores that take into account both research-and teaching-relatedness. Notable differences exist between the research-related and the teaching-related rankings.

TL;DR: As a new age begins, it is important to know what age it is that ends as we move to networked communicaton as discussed by the authors, and it is not the age of writing that is ending, nor specially the printed book, but the end of the life span of the codex (the familiar form of rectangular pages sewn and gathered between covers), the invention that revolutionized the arrangement and processing of information in the earliest centuries of the common era.

TL;DR: In the second edition of the Basic List of Veterinary Serials (2d edition) as mentioned in this paper, the average price of all journals in the basic list rose from $100.37 to $249.38, an average of 16.49% per year.
Abstract: This annual price study is the seventh derived from the Basic List of Veterinary Serials, 2d edition. The basic list is in three parts-core veterinary medical serials, an adjunct list of serials in the biomedical and life sciences, and relevant indexing and abstracting services. The Faxon Company supplied prices for all years. With this seventh study, indexing on a base of 1977 is dropped and indexing on 1983 is continued. From 1983 to 1992 the average price of all journals in the basic list rose from $100.37 to $249.38. The corresponding price index rose 148.45 percentage points, an average of 16.49% per year. The price of the core list journals rose from $69.07 in 1992 to $166.67 in 1992, or 141.30 percentage points, an average of 15.78% per year. In the adjunct core list of 85 science, clinical and pre-clinical sciences journals, the price rose from $131.30 to $333.06, or 153.66 percentage points, an annual average of 17.07%. The average of the annual increases for all the basic list journals, from 198...

TL;DR: In this paper, a survey of serials cancellations at Big Eight and Big Ten Universities is presented and the results of the work of a 1991 serials review committee are revealed.
Abstract: Cancelling serials is traumatic for everyone concerned but rising prices have left academic libraries with little choice. A number of them are planning to cancel subscriptions in 1992 as a result of very high prices in 1991. Reasons for this situation are reviewed and results of a survey of serials cancellations at Big Eight and Big Ten Universities are summarized. Major cancellations at the University of Oklahoma in 1977 and 1984 are discussed and results of the work of a 1991 serials review committee are revealed. Changes in the way libraries conduct their business need to be made. Access without ownership and electonic publishing may be the answer

TL;DR: A review of the literature concerning title changes can be found in this article, where the authors present a review of how librarians have criticized publishers for making them, the reasons title changes have occurred, and how much they cost.
Abstract: This paper presents a review of the literature concerning title changes-how librarians have criticized publishers for making them, the reasons title changes have occurred, and how much they cost. Much of the criticism is unjustified because the number of unacceptable changes is not as high as critics have suggested it is, and the costs are not as significant as has been thought. Librarians are not the end users of serials; it is the readers who play this part. Whether or not a title should be changed is a matter of primary concern of publishers and readers and of secondary concern to librarians.

TL;DR: In this paper, price studies which use a ''unit cost'' to compare journal titles within a given discipline are becoming a more important component of the review process as libraries determine which serial titles to add and which to delete.
Abstract: Given the shifting paradigm to access from ownership and the competing demands on the materials budgets from new services within academic libraries, price studies which use a «unit cost» to compare journal titles within a given discipline are becoming a more important component of the review process as libraries determine which serial titles to add and which to delete. Several studies are available from societies, and some librarians have designed their own. Longitudinal studies, which show trends in «unit cost» over time are especially helpful, and several of these are discussed

TL;DR: A strong but flexible infrastructure is fundamental to the process of building the library information delivery systems that will support scholarly communications in the future as mentioned in this paper, and technical standards are an integral part of our current information infrastructure and must be a part of the future field of dreams.
Abstract: A strong, but flexible infrastructure is fundamental to the process of building the library information delivery systems that will support scholarly communications in the future. Technical standards are an integral part of our current information infrastructure and must be a part of our future field of dreams. Like a web, standards provide support and flexibility. Like a grid, standards can provide structure, links, and direction. Technical standards are also a good way to level the playing field among participating groups

Abstract: In an effort to assist undergraduates in locating journal literature on the African-American experience, the Information Services Department at Kent State University prepared a source that identifies a selected compilation of the most important periodicals in this interdisciplinary field. A modified version of it appears as part of this article. Librarians are encouraged to adopt its format for facilitating the use of their respective institutional holdings in this area.

TL;DR: The library's use of in-house staff to search the utility and attach holdings to records found, and the sending of "no-hits" to WLN for inputting and authority control are discussed.
Abstract: This paper examines the planning, execution, and results of the University of Idaho Library's serials retrospective conversion project using WLN. The library's use of in-house staff to search the utility and attach holdings to records found, and the sending of "no-hits" to WLN for inputting and authority control are discussed. The high quality of the finished product was the direct result of the human element: the quality of the staff involved, both at UI and WLN.
