TL;DR: This session gave an overview of the serials collection development cycle at Western Carolina University, the impact that NCLive will have on that process, and how data is collected, managed, and analyzed for serial collection development.
Abstract: The introduction of a statewide electronic resources collection and its impact on one institution's serial use study is examined. The Hunter Library at Western Carolina University embarked on a serials-use study at the same time that North Carolina introduced a new statewide collection of electronic resources (NCLive) including many full-text serials. This session gave an overview of the serials collection development cycle at WCU, the impact that NCLive will have on that process, and how data is collected, managed, and analyzed for serials collection development.

TL;DR: A comparison of pre-storage and post-storage use clearly indicates a dramatic decrease in the use of the volumes in storage, demonstrating that storage can be a significant disincentive to patrons' use of serials.
Abstract: Faced with a shortage of shelf-space in 1994, librarians at the University of Akron Science and Technology Library selected and relocated over 50,000 low-use serials volumes to a remote storage facility. An examination of the requests for articles and volumes from storage indicates that in-house use data can be used to accurately predict future low use volumes. However, a comparison of pre-storage and post-storage use clearly indicates a dramatic decrease in the use of the volumes in storage, demonstrating that storage can be a significant disincentive to patrons' use of serials.

TL;DR: Analysis of the Web's information structure yields three meaningful bibliographic units: the Web site, the Web page, and the Web collection, which suggests that bibliographical control on the Web should emulate the approach used to control the journal literature.
Abstract: The Web's size, rapid growth, and disorganization render effective usage problematic. The remedy is bibliographic control. Applying bibliographic control to the Web poses two questions: first, what bibliographic units can be identified on the Web, and second, what type of bibliographic control is appropriate for each unit? Analysis of the Web's information structure yields three meaningful bibliographic units: the Web site, the Web page, and the Web collection. Parallels exist between journals and Web sites, and journal articles and Web pages. This suggests that bibliographic control on the Web should emulate the approach used to control the journal literature.

TL;DR: In this paper, a theoretical and conceptual mapping of the contours of knowledge emerges through a bibliometric approach using the Arts and Humanities Citation Index, focusing on Andre Malraux and his writings, and how their permutations reflect the evolution of knowledge along a metadisciplinary continuum.
Abstract: A theoretical and conceptual mapping of the contours of knowledge emerges through a bibliometric approach using the Arts and Humanities Citation Index. Focusing on Andre Malraux and his writings, one can discern how bibliometrics can effectively explore the subtle characteristics of disciplinary knowledge, and how their permutations reflect the evolution of knowledge along a metadisciplinary continuum. Evidence indicates that Malraux's non-disciplinary, i.e., belles-lettres, writing has influenced theoretical thinking in a number of disciplines. Malraux's intellectual and cultural influence can be effectively pursued through referential analysis. This theoretical approach provides a viable conceptual model of intellectual mutation, influence, and bibliometric veracity. This study's results show that this methodology could be applied effectively in other areas of intellectual history and cultural studies.

TL;DR: This paper will illustrate how Microsoft Access was used to collect and organize subscription information from vendor and library sources into a comprehensive review database and demonstrate how the database continues to evolve to support the management of the jour nal collection.
Abstract: In the winter of 1998, a team of librarians at The Citadel conducted a journal subscription review to determine if funds were being properly allocated to meet the teaching and research needs of the college. A review was initiated due to rising journal costs; introduction of online full-text databases; overlapping title formats; availability of document delivery services; shrinking storage space; and changes in the curriculum. The journal subscription review resulted in a reallocation of 50% of the reviewed budget toward new acquisitions of journals, databases, and document delivery services. This paper will illustrate how Microsoft Access was used to collect and organize subscription information from vendor and library sources into a comprehensive review database. It will also illustrate how the library and college faculty used this database to evaluate journal subscriptions and demonstrate how the database continues to evolve to support the management of the jour nal collection.

TL;DR: The ERLIC database as discussed by the authors was created by the Acquisitions staff at Pennsylvania State University Libraries in an effort to better manage their electronic resources, and the rationale behind the development of the database was discussed in a workshop.
Abstract: Summary When libraries acquire electronic resources there is often no tangible item received; and managing the selection, ordering, receiving, access to and payments for these resources frequently requires mechanisms different from those used for standard printed resources. This workshop described the rationale, structure and use of the ERLIC database created by the Acquisitions staff at Pennsylvania State University Libraries in an effort to better manage their electronic resources. The workshop was divided into three parts: rationale behind the development of the database, a demonstration of the database, and a discussion period.

TL;DR: It has recently been suggested at a meeting of university provosts that the ease with which articles can be posted on the Internet makes it possible to revise the entire mechanism of academic publishing, and the potential for a diminished role of traditional print journals is worthy of further discussion.
Abstract: In response to scientific journal price increases, universities and academic libraries are taking action to encourage the introduction of lower cost electronic journals that will compete with the established commercial publishers. Additionally, universities are banding together to purchase electronic journal database subscriptions on more favorable terms than could have been obtained independently. It has recently been suggested at a meeting of university provosts that the ease with which articles can be posted on the Internet makes it possible to revise the entire mechanism of academic publishing. For example, scholarly societies could create certification boards to peer-review articles submitted for publication. Upon certification, the authors could post the articles marked with a “seal of approval” on their Websites. While this proposal raises additional issues to be resolved before it could ever be implemented, the potential for a diminished role of traditional print journals is worthy of fur...

TL;DR: The impact of going online is explored and the shifts that occur in the role of the instructor, learner, and institutional support services including access to library resources are discussed.
Abstract: Summary Communications technology provides the opportunity to construct learning environments where the learner is separated by space or time. This opportunity creates new challenges for how instruction is delivered at a distance as well as how to provide the necessary support services for the learner. This session will explore the impact of going online and discuss the shifts that occur in the role of the instructor, learner, and institutional support services including access to library resources. The issue of how libraries provide distance learners with services and resources equivalent to those provided for students and faculty on campus will also be addressed. This will be addressed in the context of the new ACRL Guidelines for Distance Learning Library Services.
