TL;DR: The importance of persistent, location-independent identifiers (or names) is discussed primarily from the perspectives of information organization and the associated issues in cataloging resources in the MARC environment.
Abstract: Summary This paper describes the organization of material in D-Lib Magazine http://www.dlib.org, an online reference collection of pointers to sites containing resources in networked information and digital libraries, and a monthly, which addresses developments in advanced research and implementation projects in digital libraries and related topics. The importance of persistent, location-independent identifiers (or names) is discussed primarily from the perspectives of information organization and the associated issues in cataloging resources in the MARC environment.

TL;DR: The authors describe a set of automated archives for electronic communication of research information that have been operational in many fields of physics, and some related and unrelated disciplines, starting from 1991, and now serve over 35,000 users worldwide from over 70 countries, and process more than 70,000 electronic transactions per day.
Abstract: Summary I describe a set of automated archives for electronic communication of research information that have been operational in many fields of physics, and some related and unrelated disciplines, starting from 1991. These archives now serve over 35,000 users worldwide from over 70 countries, and process more than 70,000 electronic transactions per day. In some fields of physics, they have already supplanted traditional research journals as conveyers of both topical and archival research information. Many of the lessons learned from these systems should carry over to other fields of scholarly publication, i.e., those wherein authors are writing not for direct financial remuneration in the form of royalties, but rather primarily to communicate information (for the advancement of knowledge, with attendant benefits to their careers and professional reputations). These archives have in addition proven equally indispensable to researchers in less-developed countries.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authorship patterns of the first 16 volumes of Research Strategies are examined, including gender, collaboration, and professional and institutional affiliations, and references are analyzed by type and age.
Abstract: This analysis of the first 16 volumes of Research Strategies examines authorship patterns, including gender, collaboration. and professional and institutional affiliation. All references in the first 16 volumes are analyzed by type and age. Journals most often referenced in Research Strategies. and journals most often citing articles in Research Strategies are included in the analysis. Two of the questions the authors sought to answer were whether the percentage of research articles published in Research Strategies had increased over time, and whether the number of Research Strategies articles cited by other journals had increased.

TL;DR: The 80/20 ratio (80% of use is derived from 20% of the titles), when found as an approximate pattern, is a valid method for determining the core concept in journal collection management.
Abstract: This column examines the 80/20 rule, also termed a Pareto distribution, and explains these terms' historical origins. The column focuses on this pattern in the use of print serials, downloads from electronic databases, and citations to journals. The rule's relationship to Bradford's Law is explored, and some of the research pertaining to the 80/20 rule is reviewed. The pattern's utility for defining the core collection and serials collection management is discussed, whereas a number of limitations are pointed out. Some questions for further research are suggested. It is concluded that the 80/20 ratio (80% of use is derived from 20% of the titles), when found as an approximate pattern, is a valid method for determining the core concept in journal collection management.
