Abstract: Web services technology has generated a lot interest, but its adoption rate has been slow. This paper discusses issues related to this slow take up and argues that quality of services is one of the contributing factors. The paper proposes a new Web services discovery model in which the functional and non-functional requirements (i.e. quality of services) are taken into account for the service discovery. The proposed model should give Web services consumers some confidence about the quality of service of the discovered Web services.

Abstract: While the fundamental premise of peer-to-peer (P2P) systems is that of voluntary resource sharing among individual peers, there is an inherent tension between individual rationality and collective welfare that threatens the viability of these systems. This paper surveys recent research at the intersection of economics and computer science that targets the design of distributed systems consisting of rational participants with diverse and selfish interests. In particular, we discuss major findings and open questions related to free-riding in P2P systems: factors affecting the degree of free-riding, incentive mechanisms to encourage user cooperation, and challenges in the design of incentive mechanisms for P2P systems.

Abstract: Social network analysis has been used for a long time by sociologist as a mechanism to infer and explain social behaviours. Analysing social relations between individuals in a society using social network analysis techniques allows to identify a lot of features of that society that can be very valuable in an e-commerce environment. In this paper we describe how these techniques can be used to improve a reputation system and also how this system can be integrated with a negotiation model to increase the succes of negotiations.

Abstract: Wireless positioning determination has received increased attention during the past few years. Several wireless applications have been envisaged when mobile terminal location can be determined with sufficient accuracy at any time. In this paper, we attempt to identify the various indoor and outdoor positioning techniques that can be used for the provision of mobile and wireless applications and services. In order to maximize the benefits of this research in the area of positioning technologies, we propose a novel taxonomy with detailed analysis and evaluation of these techniques based on the accuracy that is needed for various mobile location-based services.

Abstract: We present generalized secretary problems as a framework for online auctions. Elements, such as potential employees or customers, arrive one by one online. After observing the value derived from an element, but without knowing the values of future elements, the algorithm has to make an irrevocable decision whether to retain the element as part of a solution, or reject it. The way in which the secretary framework differs from traditional online algorithms is that the elements arrive in uniformly random order.Many natural online auction scenarios can be cast as generalized secretary problems, by imposing natural restrictions on the feasible sets. For many such settings, we present surprisingly strong constant factor guarantees on the expected value of solutions obtained by online algorithms. The framework is also easily augmented to take into account time-discounted revenue and incentive compatibility. We give an overview of recent results and future research directions.
