TL;DR: In this article, a new photoelastic technique for determining the stress distribution across the thickness of tempered glass plates was proposed, and experiments were made with an aircraft windshield sample having a three-layer (glass-vinyl-glass) sandwich structure.
Abstract: Numerous attempts have been made in the past to determine nondestructively the stresses in tempered glass plates. This paper briefly reviews earlier methods, which only determine the surface stress or the stress at the middle plane, and describes a new scattered light photoelastic technique for determining the stress distribution across the thickness of tempered glass plates. The theory of this new method is developed, and experimental apparatus as well as techniques are described. Experiments were made with an aircraft windshield sample having a three-layer (glass-vinyl-glass) sandwich structure. Photographs of fringe patterns in scattered light are shown and the stress distribution across the thickness of the glass layer is determined.

TL;DR: In this paper, a practical application of the fringe multiplication method is described, using techniques reported by Post, the method was found to be convenient and less time consuming than the normal Tardy compensation technique which was used as a comparison.
Abstract: Summary A practical application of the fringe multiplication method is described. Using techniques reported by Post, the method was found to be convenient and less time consuming than the normal Tardy compensation technique which was used as a comparison. For the cases studied it was found that fringe multiplications of 7x gave equivalent fringe order distributions to the Tardy technique.

TL;DR: In this paper, an analytical method using finite element techniques for evaluating the "pinching" stresses in a beam subjected to opposing concentrated forces acting on upper and lower faces was described.
Abstract: The paper describes an analytical method using finite element techniques for evaluating the “pinching” stresses in a beam subjected to opposing concentrated forces acting on upper and lower faces. These conditions arise in restrained modulus of rupture tests on concrete beams when it is required to know the magnitude of these local stress concentrations in relation to the normal “straight line” flexural stress field. The analytical values are compared with results taken from a photo-elastic model with suitably simulated loading conditions. There is excellent correlation between the patterns of principal shear contours as plotted from the finite element solution and the isochromatic lines observed in the loaded model.
