TL;DR: The authors presented an overview of contemporary Sino-African relations and the state of trade relations, with special emphasis on natural resources and the export market for Chinese products and investments in Africa.
Abstract: Relations between Africa and China have increased over the years and become more dominated by China's economic interests. With an annual growth rate of 8-9 per cent, and a booming economy, China's dependency on accessing natural resources is a top priority and has accordingly expanded its horizons. Africa, with all its seemingly unlimited natural resources, is an ideal partner. In addition, the African continent as a whole offers a potential market for China's low-value manufactured commodities. This paper is an attempt to present an overview of contemporary Sino-African relations and the state of trade relations, with special emphasis on natural resources and the export market for Chinese products and investments in Africa

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors derive China's objectives in the Indian Ocean, its approach and the attendant security ramifications for India from the study of available information, and they assess the security implications of China's naval presence in these waters.
Abstract: China's efforts to build ‘nodes’ of influence in the Indian Ocean Region have been increasingly discernible in recent years. This endeavour, many argue, is driven by Beijing's military-strategic ends. However, such an argument remains a speculation, backed by frail and somewhat disjointed evidence. At least in the public domain, it may be too early to marshal tangible evidence to prove or dismiss the hypothesis. An assessment is nonetheless crucial because notwithstanding China's legitimate interests in the Indian Ocean, its naval presence in these waters would bear strongly upon the security calculi of India in particular and those of other major powers. From the study of available information, this paper attempts to derive China's objectives in the Indian Ocean, its approach and the attendant security ramifications for India.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on environmental crisis as a reason for the continued migration of people from Bangladesh to India and show that scarcity of land and water in the rural areas of Bangladesh, caused by rapid population growth, environmental change and unequal resource distribution and development, are causing widespread landlessness, unemployment, declining wages and income, growing income disparties and degradation of human habitat.
Abstract: Environmental crisis in the rural areas of developing countries is increasingly becoming an important cause of cross‐border migration of population and South Asia is no exception to this phenomenon. Such movement of population in the Indo‐Bangladesh context is generating a range of destabilising socio‐political, economic, ethnic and communal tensions in India. It has embittered Indo‐Bangladesh relations, causing tensions between the two countries. This paper focuses on environmental crisis as a reason for the continued migration of people from Bangladesh to India. It shows that scarcity of land and water in the rural areas of Bangladesh, caused by rapid population growth, environmental change and unequal resource distribution and development, are causing widespread landlessness, unemployment, declining wages and income, growing income disparties and degradation of human habitat. The affected people, unable to satisfy their needs in an economically less‐developed Bangladesh, are increasingly movin...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors show that there is no clear pattern of transit cargo on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) and little indication that cargo owners or shipping companies have committed themselves to use of this sea route for the longer term.
Abstract: Transit traffic on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) has increased considerably in the last few years, in relative terms. There is no clear pattern of transit cargo on the NSR and little indication that cargo owners or shipping companies have committed themselves to use of this sea route for the longer term. An important exception to this picture is the Yamal LNG (liquefied natural gas) project, which will be based on year-round use of the NSR. Administrative procedures have improved and escort fees have become competitive, but are not transparent. The future capacity of the icebreaker fleet is being questioned, and so is the need for icebreakers. Also, Russia lacks an integrated policy for the NSR.
