Abstract: Jews of African descent use to establish connections to one another, as well as to the various communities in which they claim insider status. Many black Jewish converts to rabbinic Judaism and Black Hebrews feel a sense of spiritual heritage or past familial connection to Judaism. Biracial Jews, on the other hand, employ a number of strategies to signify their membership in Jewish circles, black circles, and other communities. Jewish nonprofits and Internet networks, such as Be’chol Lashon, Yahoo! Groups, Facebook Groups, Listservs, etc., help Jews of color as they seek to connect together, as individuals and as communities. Chapter Seven, the final chapter, addresses how Jews of African descent have navigated a particularly volatile moment in relations between blacks and Jews in the United States. Haynes’ work is masterful in a way that is easy to overlook. The Soul of Judaism weaves together the relationships of black Jewish individuals to each other, to movements and organizations for the recognition of Jewish diversity, and also to various sectors of the wider Jewish and black communities in America. As anyone attentive to Jews of African descent in America knows, Jews of African descent can often live in light of an array of communities, individuals, and support networks. Haynes’ robust and nuanced approach cannot be ignored by scholars who explore the diverse religious, ethnic, and cultural contours of the American Jew and American Judaism. Unfortunately, Haynes’ retrospective ethnography already shows its age from time to time. New developments in globally intersecting ethno-racial tensions, often connected to the movements of immigrants and refugees, might further complicate matters for Jews of African descent in America. What do Jews of African descent in the United States think of the Israeli government’s recent handling of refugees from African countries, such as those arriving in Israel from Eritrea? How do Jews of African descent navigate the critical comments made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on recent African immigrants? The global linkages between ethnicity, race, religion, and statecraft are the stuff of debate in the wider American Jewish community, such that it would be helpful to know how the latest developments impact Jews of African descent in America. Nevertheless, Haynes methodological and theoretical work has provided a scaffolding for others to attend to these issues moving forward.

Abstract: Face à un désenchantement du monde annoncé, l’actualité déborde de manifestations religieuses et spirituelles de toutes sortes, certaines très pacifiques (la méditation pleine conscience, le yoga, le coaching de vie, etc.), d’autres très violentes (les attentats islamistes dans les grandes villes européennes et nord-américaines, la tuerie de Charlie Hebdo, celle de la mosquée de Québec, etc.). Cette actualité religieuse met très souvent l’accent sur les crispations identitaires et sur la violence qu’elles génèrent, si bien que tout un vocabulaire médiatique circonscrit ce champ symbolique du religieux : fondamentalisme, intégrisme, extrémisme, radicalisation, islamisme, terrorisme, attentat, dérives sectaires, etc. À côté ou en interaction avec ces explosions d’affirmation religieuse, le champ politique semble lui aussi marqué par un mouvement du même ordre, si l’on en croit la visibilité médiatique accordée aux populismes (de droite ou de gauche), aux mouvements d’extrême-droite, aux manifestations décomplexées des discours xénophobes et anti-migrants, anti-réfugiés, etc. Nous pourrions également placer dans ces manifestations politiques extrémistes, les discours et les gestes antimondialistes et écologistes qui vont de l’appel au boycottage de certaines marques à l’attaque en règle
