TL;DR: The notion of socio-technical system was created in the context of labor studies by the Tavistock Institute in London about the end of the fifties (Emery/Trist, 1960). During the first decades of our century, labor studies had been largely concerned with the adaptation of humans to the organizational and technical framework of production as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The notion of the socio-technical system was created in the context of labor studies by the Tavistock Institute in London about the end of the fifties (Emery/Trist, 1960). During the first decades of our century, labor studies had been largely concerned with the adaptation of humans to the organizational and technical framework of production; I just mention well known names such as Frederick Winslow Taylor or Henry Ford. In the thirties already, it is true, some researchers, like Elton Mayo (1946) and others in their famous Hawthorne studies, discovered the so-called human factor in industrial relations, but they mainly focused on individual psychology. Although these findings seemed to disprove the idea of technological determinism, in labor studies and industrial sociology, nevertheless, this idea remained prevalent for a long time. Technology was considered to be the independent, more or less autonomous variable; the mental and social conditions of human work had to follow the given technical structures and could be improved just marginally in one or the other case.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors define risk as the statistical expectation value of unwanted events which may or may not occur, and risk is the fact that a decision is made under conditions of known probabilities (decision under risk).
Abstract: (1) risk = an unwanted event which may or may not occur. (2) risk = the cause of an unwanted event which may or may not occur. (3) risk = the probability of an unwanted event which may or may not occur. (4) risk = the statistical expectation value of unwanted events which may or may not occur. (5) risk = the fact that a decision is made under conditions of known probabilities (“decision under risk”)

TL;DR: The strengths and weaknesses of contemporary philosophy of technology, and how may the field be developed and improved in the future, are discussed in this article, where the authors identify the areas in the field that are currently underdeveloped or have been stagnant and suggest ways of moving forward in them.
Abstract: What are the strengths and weaknesses of contemporary philosophy of technology, and how may the field be developed and improved in the future? That is the question I will address in this paper. I will argue that in the past twenty-five years, philosophy of technology has entered a new era. This era has arrived with new and distinct issues and approaches that differ from those that came before it. Many of the new developments have been for the good. Yet, I will also argue, there are still large areas in the field that are currently underdeveloped or have been stagnant. I will identify these areas and suggest ways of moving forward in them.

TL;DR: The starting point of nanotechnology was the classic talk given by Feynman (1959), in which he said: “The principles of physics, as far as I can see, do not speak against the possibility of maneuvering things atom by atom...It would be, in principle, possible (I think) for a physicist to synthesize any chemical substance that the chemist writes down as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: It is often asserted that the starting point of nanotechnology was the classic talk given by Feynman (1959), in which he said: “The principles of physics, as far as I can see, do not speak against the possibility of maneuvering things atom by atom...It would be, in principle, possible (I think) for a physicist to synthesize any chemical substance that the chemist writes down. Give the orders and the physicist synthesizes it. How? Put the atoms down where the chemist says, and so you make the substance.” Today's champions of nanotech add: “We need to apply at the molecular scale the concept that has demonstrated its effectiveness at the macroscopic scale: making parts go where we want by putting them where we want!” (Merke 2003)
