TL;DR: The authors reviewed the competencies favored by library leaders, and the relationship of publishers, librarians, and library users in light of changes resulting from developing technologies, concluding that the ability of the profession to meet the library service needs of the next generation requires that library educators and practitioners join hands in educational programs, that these programs develop along interdisciplinary lines and that organizational change in libraries respond to the changing nature of professional services.
Abstract: The changes accompanying the movement to an electronically- oriented society are seen as having a revolutionary influence on the nature of publishing and on library services. In professional circles there is much concern that library education programs prepare future librarians for work which may have little to do with formal communication limited to print on paper. The competencies favored by library leaders are reviewed, and the relationship of publishers, librarians, and library users is discussed in light of changes resulting from developing technologies. The ability of the profession to meet the library service needs of the next generation requires that library educators and practitioners join hands in educational programs, that these programs develop along interdisciplinary lines, and that organizational change in libraries respond to the changing nature of professional services.

TL;DR: In the near future, there will be an increased demand and utilization of the library by the public, where the library will function as an information evaluation and referral agency as mentioned in this paper, which will adapt service functions and its organizational structure to meet the demand for a more highly trained professional who possesses a greater arsenal of skills and has more perceived expertise.
Abstract: Libraries will remain recognizable as we now know them in the near future. There will be an increased demand and utilization of the library by the public, where the library will function as an information evaluation and referral agency. It will successfully compete economically with vendors offering commercial information products. It will adapt service functions and its organizational structure to meet the demand for a more highly trained professional who possesses a greater arsenal of skills and has more perceived expertise than librarians now do. Specialization in assignments will come through knowledge of subject fields; there will be a sharper division between administrative personnel and the professional group, and there will be a smaller corps of clericals. Most technical service functions will be done in bibliographic processing centers outside the library. Technical service librarians will be absorbed into the public service ranks, become systems analyst consultants, work in bibliographic record ...

TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider the affect of the continuing spread of automation on library technical services in general, and on cataloging staff in particular, and support the view that staff will decline and that the distinction between technical staff and public staff will erode.
Abstract: This article considers the affect of the continuing spread of automation on library technical services in general, and on cataloging staff in particular. Support is given to the view that staff will decline and that the distinction between technical staff and public staff will erode. A mix of technical-public service work is urged for all staff in addition to a safe and healthy automated workplace. Future cataloging procedures in a fully automated setting are projected, and greater productivity with lower costs are predicted. The automated library should be a better library, but it is vital that change in job content and staffing patterns accompany the new technical environment.

TL;DR: The factor that will influence American libraries most in the next decade is the computer and online catalogs will become the central databases for integrated library-wide systems used for acquisitions and circulation.
Abstract: The factor that will influence American libraries most in the next decade is the computer. Another major influence on libraries is falling budgets relative to the cost of library materials. In the next ten years we should see a tremendous growth in automation, with online catalogs becoming much more numerous and successful. They will become the central databases for integrated library-wide systems used for acquisitions and circulation. Serials may be more difficult to integrate into these automated systems, however. The crying need for research libraries in the next decade-a national information network-is likely to be unfilled. Finally, the author expresses less than profound faith in his predictions.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present the choices made by faculty members of perodical titles they considered to be basic, or core, for academic libraries at institutions offering the master's degree in the areas of art, literature, history, psychology, mathematics and physics.
Abstract: This paper presents the choices made by faculty members of perodical titles they considered to be basic, or core, for academic libraries at institutions offering the master's degree in the areas of art, literature, history, psychology, mathematics and physics. The methodology used in the construction of the six core lists is explained, and the compilations are offered as examples of the type of checklists which can be developed and used as tools in collection development activities. There has been no attempt to present the core lists developed for this study as anything more than representative selections of knowledgeable faculty in selected subject areas.

TL;DR: This article examined periodical holdings in 26 academic libraries against six subject area core lists developed by faculty reviewers and reported the results of comparisons made between the core lists and actual holdings as well as comparisons of the expenditure of funds by the libraries included in the survey for titles in the subject areas examined.
Abstract: This paper examines periodical holdings in 26 academic libraries against six subject area core lists developed by faculty reviewers. It reports the results of comparisons made between the core lists and actual holdings as well as comparisons of the expenditure of funds by the libraries included in the survey for titles in the subject areas examined. The results indicate (1) a lack of similarity between the titles selected for inclusion in a basic periodical collection by faculty members and the titles acquired by the libraries as well as (2) a rather striking pattern of similarity among the libraries in the amount of money allocated for the acquisition of core titles in the subject areas under investigation: an, literature, history, psychology, mathematics and physics.

TL;DR: This paper reviewed some of the pressures leading to the rapid development of on-line catalogs and projects some possible changes which will result, including efficient use of cooperative networks among all types of libraries.
Abstract: Progress in development of on-line catalogs is rapid and impressive. Much of this progress is due to financial pressures: on-line catalogs may be able to provide improved services at diminished costs. Computerized catalogs will enable other, more significant changes in libraries and their operations than are usually perceived, including finally, efficient use of cooperative networks among all types of libraries. This essay reviews some of the pressures leading to the rapid development of on-line catalogs and projects some of the possible changes which will result.

TL;DR: This paper is an attempt to stimulate novel approaches to the development of automated authority control in a computer-based system, because of its multi-dimensional capabilities.
Abstract: This paper is an attempt to stimulate novel approaches to the development of automated authority control. Traditionally, authority control involved modifications to all affected headings when the authority file entries were changed to conform to changes in rules, policies, or new information. In a computer-based system, because of its multi-dimensional capabilities, headings established as valid at the time a work was described by a cataloger need not be updated when rules and policies are changed.
