TL;DR: This article begins with a folksy exploration of the evolution of audiovisual materials as an important media and discusses the tendency within the cataloging community to treat these materials differently from print publications, i.e., give them less-than-full cataloging.
Abstract: This article begins with a folksy exploration of the evolution of audiovisual materials as an important media. It then discusses the tendency within the cataloging community to treat these materials differently from print publications, i.e., give them less-than-full cataloging. Handman then discusses the Impact of minimal-level cataloging on the ability of the user to retrieve these materials. Handman cites examples where access to them is greatly impeded by the lack of added entries, subject headings and genre headings.

TL;DR: Although catalogers spend more time at VDTs than they did five years ago, offline cataloging and editing and a variety of processes related to the maintenance of manual files are not unusual and ergonomic furniture, other than pneumatically adjustable chairs, it not widely available.
Abstract: As online public access catalogs become more prevalent, one might expect catalog librarians to become more dependent upon the use of VDTs, leading to concerns about possible physiological effects of VDT use, greater availability of ergonomic furniture, and increased interest in identifying work to be done away from the computer terminal. Responses to a questionnaire sent to heads of cataloging in 185 medium-sized academic libraries in the U.S. suggest That, although catalogers spend more time at VDTs than they did five years ago, offline cataloging and editing and a variety of processes related to the maintenance of manual files are not unusual and that ergonomic furniture, other than pneumatically adjustable chairs, it not widely available.

TL;DR: The compact disc product provides statistical data as well as lists of titles in specified categories, such as overlap titles in specific call number ranges, in a collection development setting.
Abstract: In 1989 OCLC and the AMIGOS Bibliographic Council released a new product called "Collection Analysis CD." It was developed to assist OCLC libraries in measuring the adequacy of their collections as compared with peer institutions. The compact disc product provides statistical data as well as lists of titles in specified categories, such as overlap titles in specific call number ranges. This paper evaluates the product and describes possible uses in a collection development setting.

TL;DR: A decade of changes in technology, cataloging practices and resource sharing have increased the importance of cataloging managers and decision-makers but reduced their importance of individual catalogers.
Abstract: A decade of changes in technology, cataloging practices and resource sharing have increased the importance of cataloging managers and decision-makers but reduced the importance of individual catalogers. To survive, traditional catalogers must adopt new and productive work methods, increase their skills as definers of quality and strive to become contributors to and participants in library operations as a whole.

TL;DR: In this article, a video cataloging task force conducted an in-depth study to determine what data on the bibliographic record was necessary, and was not, and a modified full level cataloging record was agreed to.
Abstract: In 1986, Northwestern University Library began acquiring videorecordings which would support the university's teaching programs. With the expectation of suddenly receiving six hundred new videos, saving cataloging time became a paramount concern. In light of the desire to continue reducing the existing cataloging backlog, a video cataloging task force conducted an in-depth study to determine what data on the bibliographic record was necessary, and was not. After consultations with staff both in the Catalog Department and the Media Facility, a modified full level cataloging record was agreed to. This paper describes the decision-making process that led to the formulation of a local cataloging policy that continues to meet the needs of the Northwestern community.

TL;DR: The role of the Louisiana State Library in editing and upgrading many of the brief cataloging records supplied by the small public libraries of Louisiana is discussed in this paper, which has neither the cataloging expertise nor the financial resources to do full level cataloging.
Abstract: In 1987, Louisiana initiated the nations's first statewide bibliographic database in CD-ROM format to be linked to an interlibrary loan network referral system. This paper discusses the LAsernet database, and the role that the Louisiana State Library plays in editing and upgrading many of the brief cataloging records supplied by the small public libraries of Louisiana which have neither the cataloging expertise nor the financial resources to do full level cataloging.

TL;DR: Yale Law Library devised an inhouse project to provide authority records for a six year tape load and procedures for authority work for current cataloging were developed and maintained concurrently with the project.
Abstract: With the advent of the online catalog and the decision not to send the tapes to a vendor, Yale Law Library devised an inhouse project to provide authority records for a six year tape load. The bulk of the project was completed within a year. Procedures for authority work for current cataloging were developed and maintained concurrently with the project.

TL;DR: An experiment with self-managing work groups in the Catalog Department at the University of Florida Libraries finds that team organization is recommended as an approach which can increase the enthusiasm and effectiveness of employees.
Abstract: This paper describes an experiment with self-managing work groups in the Catalog Department at the University of Florida Libraries. Over the past three years, paraprofessionals have become involved in more complex activities, and new paraprofessional positions have been added as a result of these changes, the Monograph Cataloging Unit was reorganized into subject teams. Advantages of the new structure include more help available to paraprofessionals, less isolation for all Unit members, more participatory decision making, and management training for librarians. Team organization is recommended as an approach which can increase the enthusiasm and effectiveness of employees.

TL;DR: The researchers examined the changes in workflow by tracking 641 social science firm orders (excluding serials) to identify possible bottlenecks and unpredicted delays in the process from selection to availability to the library patrons.
Abstract: In September 1990, the Sterling C. Evans Library at Texas A&M university implemented the NOTIS acquisitions module. The cataloging, OPAC, circulation, and serials records functions were already operational. The researchers examined the changes in workflow by tracking 641 social science firm orders (excluding serials) to identify possible bottlenecks and unpredicted delays in the process from selection to availability to the library patrons. All of the orders were tracked for eight months, at which time the researchers analyzed the results. Initially, researchers noted that training, staff adjusting to changes in procedures, and new equipment resulted in processing delays. The continued lack of adequate equipment and high turnover in calaloging personnel had the greatest effect later in the study.

TL;DR: The benefits and drawbacks of the configuration are outlined and the rationale for the move is explained, the seven year planning and construction effort is described, and the issues that surfaced before and since the staff moved to the facility are related.
Abstract: In January, 1989, the central technical and automated services staff for the Rutgers University Libraries moved into a new building, designed and constructed specifically to house only technical services operations. Today, all tasks involved in systemwide acquisitions, copy and original cataloging, catalog maintenance, processing, and computer services are performed in a building separate and remote from the 18 University Libraries. This paper outlines the benefits and drawbacks of his configuration and explains the rationale for the move, describes the seven year planning and construction effort, and relates the issues that surfaced before and since the staff moved to the facility.

TL;DR: This article describes implementing the MARC holdings format through machine conversion and through hands-on coding and data entry, and presents two actual and one potential means of retrospective conversion that have taken place or are being tested at University Libraries, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Abstract: This article describes implementing the MARC holdings format through machine conversion and through hands-on coding and data entry. It presents two actual and one potential means of retrospective conversion that have taken place or are being tested at University Libraries, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. One conversion project from nonstandard holdings in an online catalog, converted thorough holdings information but supplied many default coded values. The manual conversion project prescribed specific values for all applicable codes and included detailed holdings. A proposed conversion method from online union list information, would generate MARC holdings records for current or future online catalogs.
