TL;DR: In this paper, the University of Delaware Library initiated a formal mentoring program to help librarians fulfill the requirements of becoming active in professional organizations and fulfilling the requirements for promotion.
Abstract: In 1993, professionals at the University of Delaware Library initiated a formal mentoring program. Turnover and additions of professional positions had produced rapid changes in the composition of the staff during the 1980's. Many staff members faced the challenges of becoming active in professional organizations and fulfilling the requirements for promotion. Although informal mentoring partnerships already existed, the staff thought that it would be useful to formalize these relationships in a library-wide mentoring program. A committee was formed to evaluate mentoring programs at other institutions, and then present potential models to the staff for development to fit the Library's needs. The resulting three-tiered program has helped professional staff members receive orientation to the Library's corporate culture, obtain advice on promotion preparation, and learn about opportunities for profession al growth in the field of librarianship.

TL;DR: This article attempts to follow the introduction of electronic text through a large university library system, finding that electronic text represents a new development in humanities electronic resources.
Abstract: Library electronic resources do not emerge of their own accord. Their acceptance and use are a product of characteristics of the technologies themselves and the way they are perceived by people. Social groups also have a major role to play in shaping technologies. In this article we attempt to follow the introduction of electronic text through a large university library system. Electronic text represents a new development in humanities electronic resources. Library professionals as mediators are particularly well-positioned to effect the way this technology takes shape. The decisions about space, hardware, and resource allocation, have had a role to play in how this new technology has been adopted. Other factors considered here include the acceptance of electronic text in technical services, and the ways in which the electronic text community has been built both inside and outside the library.

TL;DR: For distant retrieval to work, MARC AMC information must become more standardized, and user education (including through help screens) must be tailored to the problems of distant retrievers.
Abstract: This article builds on an earlier study that found the MARC AMC format confusing to users To decide whether this stemmed from a lack of knowledge among users, or from the records, this study surveyed two groups, only one of which was familiar with USMARC The results showed the level of user knowledge to be an issue, but only on some questions On others, the problem stemmed from the record Implication: For distant retrieval to work, MARC AMC information must become more standardized In addition, user education (including through help screens) must be tailored to the problems of distant retrievers

TL;DR: The project to improve the interlibrary loan process for the patron and to more efficiently use staffing and technology resources in the Access Services Department at SIUC are described.
Abstract: The utilization of new technologies to enhance service to library users, combined with diminishing resources for interlibrary loan functions spurred the development of World Wide Web-based interlibrary loan services at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale (SIUC) By supporting inter-departmental cooperation, Library Affairs has been able to incorporate unique skills from three areas to develop a product that utilizes the functionality of the World Wide Web, works well with OCLC's interlibrary loan subsystem, and enhances the workflow in the interlibrary loan processing unit This article describes the project to improve the interlibrary loan process for the patron and to more efficiently use staffing and technology resources in the Access Services Department at SIUC

TL;DR: How the worlds of document delivery and Interlibrary Loan have collided and are melding firmly into one another is discussed and will pose questions regarding what this joining means to resource sharing in a “document delivery and beyond” arena.
Abstract: The phrase “document delivery and beyond” leads obviously to the question “beyond what?” This article reviews document delivery's recent past, the current mode of service and finally future visions. Also discussed are how the worlds of document delivery and Interlibrary Loan, two entities so long distinct, have collided and are melding firmly into one another and will pose questions regarding what this joining means to resource sharing in a “document delivery and beyond” arena.

TL;DR: The problems and potential of applying SGML to the USMARC record standard are examined, with a particular emphasis on issues of field order and repeatability, character set encoding, and obsolete fields.
Abstract: The recent increase in electronic publishing has led many in the library community to consider altering standards for bibliographic data to promote greater compatibility between digital works and their bibliographic representation. The Standard Generalized Markup Language (SGML) has been prominently mentioned as a mechanism for encoding bibliographic data. This paper will examine the problems and potential of applying SGML to the USMARC record standard, with a particular emphasis on issues of field order and repeatability, character set encoding, and obsolete fields.

TL;DR: The Pennsylvania State University Libraries' map collection has utilized the Innovacq Serials Control System, a subset of the Innopac computer catalog program, to automate acquisitions and historic holdings of this unwieldy series.
Abstract: Map collectors have struggled to establish and maintain efficient storage and retrieval methods for large map series. The U.S. Geological Survey's series of 7.5 minute topographic quadrangles is a particularly compelling case. Organizing and accessing a scries comprised of more than 57,000 individual current sheets, and countless historic editions, is a monumental task. Even with the incorporation of computer technology, the maintenance of this widely used set has remained something of a problem in many collections. At the Pennsylvania State University Libraries' map collection we have utilized the Innovacq Serials Control System, a subset of the Innopac computer catalog program, to automate acquisitions and historic holdings of this unwieldy series. Innovacq allows us to record both sheet level and edition information, potentially for all large map sets. The paper discusses the arrangement of the online catalog and check-in records created for the project, overall system functions, and personnel...

TL;DR: In this article, the Auraria Library administration determined that the facility needed to be rewired to accommodate emerging electronic technologies in order to take full advantage of the campus-wide, fiber-optic, network.
Abstract: The Auraria Library administration determined that the facility needed to be rewired to accommodate emerging electronic technologies in order to take full advantage of the campus-wide, fiber-optic, network. In requesting a grant for this project, it became evident that the technical services area, in particular, needed to be renovated and reorganized in addition to being rewired. This article reports on the physical and philosophical factors that were considered to accomplish these goals. Future trends in technical services are discussed along with some general information on wiring technology and building design.
