Abstract: ATP(adenosine triphosphate) was used as an indicator to assess the microbial viability of activated sludge during the operation of wastewater treatment plants.Effects of different environmental factors (including pollutant load) on ATP was also studied.It was found that ATP assay was a rapid and reliable way to measure the activity of activated sludge and the applicatility of ATP information in activated sludge plants is promising.
