TL;DR: Within a small group of ten and eleven-year-old children and a separate group of their parents changes occurred in attitudes and in parent-child communications following participation in a planned sex education program.
Abstract: Within a small group of ten- and eleven-year-old children and a separate group of their parents changes occurred in attitudes and in parent- child communications following participation in a planned sex education program. Attitude changes objectively measured pointed to movement in both groups from lesser to greater permissiveness relevant to such aspects of sexuality as masturbation same-sex behavior nudity love-making touch-talk and gender identity. Responses to open-ended questions and anecdotal observations suggested a wide range of changes within parent-child relationships in terms of course- relevant communications. (authors)

Abstract: In this paper the authors describe a relationship enrichment workshop they have developed and conducted for married and engaged college students. The workshop is for healthy couples and not primarily rehabilitative in nature. Rather the goal of the workshop is to teach participants some concepts and exercises for improving their mnutual communication, including expression of affection and constructive fighting. It is the authors' hope that this paper will encourage more preventive mental health programs for married adults and those contemplating matrimony.

TL;DR: In this paper, a study of family life education was carried out in order to deternine if the attitudes held by adolescents, especially toward themselves and toward their families, could be changed in a positive direction as a result of participation in a one-semester course.
Abstract: A study of family life education was carried out in order to deternine if the attitudes held by adolescents, especially toward themselves and toward their families, could be changed in a positive direction as a result of participation in a one-semester course in family life education. Three directional hypotheses were tested. The experimental groups and the control groups were tested at the beginning and at the end of the semester. The results of the study suggest that an adolescent's feelings about himself can be improved, thus contributing to increased self-acceptance and a more positive self-image.

TL;DR: The authors defined and explained foster care as it relates to the foster father and his special problems, attempting to differentiate foster fatherhood from ordinary fatherhood, and to suggest important qualities of the interaction between foster fathers and their professional casework supervisors.
Abstract: Research on family roles has long neglected the father, and foster care has similarly focused on the foster mother. This paper defines and explains foster care as it relates to the foster father and his special problems, attempting to differentiate foster fatherhood from ordinary fatherhood, and to suggest important qualities of the interaction between foster fathers and their professional casework supervisors. Certain data indicate that despite the unfavorable setting, foster fathers often do take the initiative to achieve a meaningful place in the fostering situation, and they do help socialize the foster boys. Practical implications are touched upon at the conclusion.

TL;DR: In this article, forty social work students were tested to determine how their SKI (Sex Knowledge Inventory) scores compared with those of other professional students. Tests revealed the social work student was not as knowledgeable as the student of medicine, law, or nursing.
Abstract: Social work must address itself to educating students in the field of human sexuality if it is to prepare them to deal adequately with the problems of the family, adolescence, mental health, etc. Social work has a limited literature in this area, and only recently have the curricula of schools of social work begun to reflect the interest in human sexuality. In this study, forty social work students were tested to determine how their SKI (Sex Knowledge Inventory) scores compared with those of other professional students. Tests revealed the social work student was not as knowledgeable as the student of medicine, law, or nursing.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a control group receiving no treatment, a group receiving eight hours of programmed instruction on communication in marriage, and an eight hour of counseling emphasizing marital communication was randomly assigned to three groups.
Abstract: Thirty couples referred to Conciliation Court because of marital problems were randomly assigned to three groups: (a) a control group receiving no treatment; (b) a group receiving eight hours of programmed instruction on communication in marriage; and (c) a group receiving eight hours of counseling emphasizing marital communication. Total Semantic Differential scores were obtained from each couple pretest and posttest, as well as reconciliation decisions following treatments. Between groups comparisons revealed significant diferences between control and counseled groups on both criterion variables. Compared to the control group, the programmed text group changed positively on these variables, but not significantly. Results were discussed.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The authors found that parent attitudes toward specific content in high school sex education programs were related to a liberal-traditional orientation as well as social class religion whether children were pre- or post-pubescent and age of parent.
Abstract: Parental attitudes toward specific content in high school sex education programs were related to a liberal-traditional orientation as well as social class religion whether children were pre- or post-pubescent and age of parent. A random sample of 250 parents approved most discussion topics as measured by the Sex Education Content Scale (SECS). Content of sex education must be logically and functionally related to goals and methods. As the attack on sex education subsides sex education cannot be viewed as a "dead issue." The name of a program should accurately describe the content. (authors)
