TL;DR: In this paper, a board game called Family Contract, which guides family members through basic steps in interpersonal problem solving, is proposed to guide families who usually fail in therapy and the game's capacity for promoting response generalization and maintenance of improvement after training.
Abstract: A programmed board game, called Family Contract, guides family members through basic steps in interpersonal problem solving. Family members can, in 15 minutes, write a contract that identifies a displeasing problem behavior, describe a pleasing replacement behavior, and arrange contingent reinforcement and recording of pleasing behavior. The paper discusses guidelines for game play and criteria for evaluating how effectively the game reduces the costs and increases the rewards offamily life. Clinical advantages are discussed including the game's suitability for families who usually fail in therapy and the game's capacity for promoting response generalization and maintenance of improvement after training.

TL;DR: The concept of role making as discussed by the authors is a useful one for this purpose because it enables the practitioner to encourage change as well as to account for change that is not normatively defined.
Abstract: This paper is an attempt to bring to the attention of family practitioners the concept of role making as a means for analyzing family change. The concept is a useful one for this purpose because it enables the practitioner to encourage change as well as to account for change that is not normatively defined. The necessary conceptual clarification will also indicate that role making bridges the gap between the individual and the already existing structure of interaction patterns whether in families or society. It, therefore, ties together personality and social variables so that the practitioner can escape an "either-or" perspective. There are expectable family changes which do have a strong normative component. Among these changes are those due to the varying numbers and age composition in families, as they endure through the various phases of the family cycle. Some modifications in role content, loss of roles and addition of roles are channeled by age and gender norms. Examples are having children, their leaving home, and

TL;DR: The only two programs revealed in a search of the literature were those of Chaplin and Kratter and Thorne as discussed by the authors and the pamphlet To Protect the Retarded Adolescent published by the Human Betterment Association for Voluntary Sterilization.
Abstract: The handicapped are in need of family living courses even more than the non-handicapped for the following reasons: they often spend less time at home so parents have less opportunity to talk with them; their parents are often less qualified to teach them properly; they need more help in controlling their sexual impulses because they have less opportunity to express themselves in other areas; and because they may want to prevent the birth of children for their own sake or the sake of the child contraceptive information may be necessary. The only two programs revealed in a search of the literature were those of Chaplin and Kratter and Thorne. The paucity of material in the literature led the writer to contact by letter fifty-five individuals and agencies including those mentioned in Maws thesis on sex education. (Maw 1953) The letter stated that the author was doing research in the field of family life courses and sex education for the handicapped and asked for information on any such programs. Included in the letter to those working in the field of mental deficiency was the pamphlet To Protect the Retarded Adolescent published by the Human Betterment Association for Voluntary Sterilization. Forty-four answers were received. Most of these writers expressed a need for more information in this area but were unable to give any data or supply any leads. The letter from a specialists in Education of Exceptional Children of the Department of Health Education and Welfare is typical. "We regret that we do not know of any studies specifically on sex education of the retarded aside from the general treatises in this field. While we have reason to believe that a considerable amount of sex education is carried on in the units on family living we find little specific reference in curriculum guides for the retarded." Also the writer made some inquiries in the Philadelphia metropolitan area to determine whether there were any programs in the special classes or in the schools for the handicapped. (excerpt)

TL;DR: In this paper, a brief historical analysis of civilizations growth towards patriarchy and analyzes the cognitive, affective and conative aspects of stereotyping is presented, concluding that role stereotypes need to be abolished.
Abstract: Begins with a brief historical analysis of civilizations growth towards patriarchy and analyzes the cognitive, affective and conative aspects of stereotyping. The research into sex differences is reported and values and biases not usually considered are mentioned. Schools and homes are cited for their support in promulgating stereotypes. Suggests in conclusion that role stereotypes need to be abolished.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors argue that involuntary parenthood contributes to population problems and may have deleterious consequences for the mental health of both parent and child, and propose alternative strategies for manipulating fertility decision-making.
Abstract: Research on voluntary childlessness has implications for at least three kinds of situations wherein social policies arefiormulated and enacted: first, the relationship between citizens and politicians in which pronatalist policies are expounded; second, the relationship between clients and professional counselors in which parenthood is advocated; and third, the relationship between patients and physicians in which access to fertility control is restricted. Involuntary parenthood contributes to population problems and may have deleterious consequences for the mental health of both parent and child. Some suggestions are outlined for counteracting pronatalist policies with alternative strategies for manipulating fertility decision making.

TL;DR: In this paper, a guide is presented for evaluating college family sociology textbooks in order to demonstrate how allfamily sociology textbooks should be examined as to their treatment of Black family literature, and most are found to be inaccurate and unacceptable; only a few meet acceptable criteria.
Abstract: A serious issue in the family sociology field is the inadequacies of both research and textbooks in the treatment of Black American families. The contemporary view of the Black family usually emphasizes concepts of (1) deviancy, (2) pathology, and/or (3) uncontrolled sexuality. College family sociology textbooks in the family sociology field are analyzed in order to demonstrate how allfamily sociology textbooks should be examined as to their treatment of Black family literature. Most are found to be inaccurate and unacceptable; only a few meet acceptable criteria. A guide is presented for evaluating college family sociology textbooks.

TL;DR: The family growth group as mentioned in this paper is a promising mode of family education commonly referred to as the "family growth group," "family cluster", or "family enrichment" program. But it is not suitable for families as individuals.
Abstract: Currently emerging in many regions of the United States is a promising mode of family education variously referred to as the "family growth group," "family cluster," or "family enrichment" program. The family growth group may be defined as a program involving three to five families who meet together regularly and frequently for mutual care and support and for the development of family potential. Such a program has at least three unique advantages as a means for strengthening families: (1) The family growth group goes beyond most traditional family life education programs by involving the whole family together as a unit in the experience. Reuben Hill and Joan Aldous are critical of most family life education programs for teaching individuals instead of being designed for families as groups (1969, 934). David Speer, who views traditional family life education programs as sterile and superficial, calls for innovative programs that combine the new

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe the manner in which a course in human sexuality was developed and successfully implemented at a graduate school of social work and discuss current deficits in social work education in preparing future social workers for roles as sex educatiors and counselors.
Abstract: This paper describes the manner in which a course in human sexuality was developed and successfully implemented at a graduate school of social work. Current deficits in social work education in preparing future social workers for roles as sex educatiors and counselors are discussed, as well as newer trends. Methods and materials used in the course are delineated in detail in order to share this experience with other graduate professional educators.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provide a rationale for providing some systematic sex information to youth between nine and twelve years of age through reviewing several research studies investigating early heterosexual play among this age group.
Abstract: The author attempts to provide a rationale for providing some systematic sex information to youth between nine and twelve years of age. Incidences of early heterosexual play among this age group are reported through reviewing several research studies investigating this phenomena. The author draws on his own research as well as that of others to show what sources of information are available to the preadolescent. This research reveals that peers are the primary source although the accuracy of the information is quite low. Finally discussion as to the nature and content of systematic sex education is presented. (authors)

TL;DR: Therapists engaged in the use of family therapy as a treatment method are consistently faced with a rather intense resistance on the part of the family to being treated as a unit.
Abstract: Therapists engaged in the use offamily therapy as a treatment method are consistently faced with a rather intense resistance on the part of the family to being treated as a unit. These difficulties are reportedfrequently in the literature. The author's own experience both in doing and supervising family therapy has necessitated some focusing on this perplexing problem.
