TL;DR: In this paper, the authors outline an approach to visual studies in which researchers neither resist nor romanticize the image and to which both disciplinary and interdisciplinary concerns have something to contribute. But their contrasting perspectives raise questions about how research of this sort can be pursued most productively: as a strand or dimension of sociological inquiry, or through cross-disciplinary work in qualitative research or cultural studies? By attending to photographic and video tape recordings, or by deliberately avoiding them in favor or other forms of evidence.
Abstract: Recent books by Prosser (1998) and by Emmison and Smith (2000) recommend increased research attention to the visual dimensions of culture and social life, but their contrasting perspectives raise questions about how research of this sort can be pursued most productively: As a strand or dimension of sociological inquiry, or through cross-disciplinary work in qualitative research or cultural studies? By attending to photographic and video tape recordings, or by deliberately avoiding them in favor or other forms of evidence? As one answer to these questions, this essay outlines an approach to visual studies in which researchers neither resist nor romanticize the image and to which both disciplinary and interdisciplinary concerns have something to contribute.

TL;DR: In this paper, a step-by-step process by which the visual novice can begin to introduce the analysis of visual materials into the classroom and become more accomplished in creating and interpreting images for research purposes is described.
Abstract: The classroom provides a very useful site for developing the skills and sensibilities of visual sociology. This paper outlines a step by step process by which the visual novice can begin to introduce the analysis of visual materials into the classroom and, in the bargain, become more accomplished in creating and interpreting images for research purposes. The cash value - as William James would say - of following such a program would not only be a more vigorous, exhilarating, and insightful sociology, but also an academy full of more versatile, and happier, sociologists.

TL;DR: Gaventa as discussed by the authors examined the notion of justice sociale and le role social that les sociologues peuvent jouer en faveur de sa defense dans le monde entier.
