TL;DR: The Ashgate Research Companion to Memory Studies as mentioned in this paper is a collection of essays by philosophers, historians, sociologists, literary and cultural theorists, political scientists and experimental psychologists on memory research.
Abstract: Contemporary epistemologies place the subject at the centre of knowledge construction in the Humanities and Social Sciences, and the emerging field of memory studies is a pre-eminent example. Memory research is nothing if not reflective, so research can be seen as a personal journey or quest. Scholars, however, seldom seek truth in isolation, so companionship or guidance is considered essential. This is the central organising metaphor for The Ashgate Research Companion to Memory Studies. Taking her cue from Pierre Nora’s conception of ‘ego-histoire’ (1987), editor Siobhan Kattago asked her contributors to reflect on their work ‘through the prism of their companions’. The result is an anthology which showcases the multifaceted nature of current memory research. The book includes essays by philosophers, historians, sociologists, literary and cultural theorists, political scientists and experimental psychologists. Since the 1990s, the field has grown exponentially, leading many to speak of a ‘memory boom’. As the sheer volume of primary and secondary literature now focused on memory can be overwhelming for those entering the field, one of the principal aims of the Companion is to help young scholars identify a mentor from among the contributors and find a research path they can follow. This is easier said than done, as the sheer number of paths opened up here adds another layer of complexity to a field already experienced as labyrinthine. Jeffrey Olick provides an Afterword which readers not already immersed in memory research may find helpful. Olick speaks of ‘three waves’ in the historical development of the field. The first emerged between the First and Second World Wars from the work of

TL;DR: In this paper, an account of Taiwan as an object of knowledge and representation in instances of scholarship and policy, Taiwanese politics, urban development and art, arguing that the narratives through which Taiwan is understood embed a lived experience as Taiwanese under forms of epistemological domination.
Abstract: Taiwan is a liminal site of modernity in Asia. It is a modern exemplar as a liberal democracy with a developed economy, but is mostly unrecognized as a nation-state in the international system. In its liminality, however, it traces contours of modern power and their epistemological expression. This paper presents an account of Taiwan as an object of knowledge and representation in instances of scholarship and policy, Taiwanese politics, urban development and art, arguing that the narratives through which Taiwan is understood embed a lived experience as Taiwanese under forms of epistemological domination. The paper then explores Taiwanese responses of co-option and resistance in alternative sites of knowledge, and it concludes that the critical unexamined force in Taiwan’s experience of modernity is violence.

TL;DR: In this paper, a careful interpretation of Adorno's classical text The Essay as Form, published in 1958 as the introduction to his Notes on Literature, is presented, and three lines of interpretation are suggested: (a) poetological for the essay/Essay's definition, goal, and method; (b) critical/dialectical for its treatment of concepts and in relation to content; and (c) epistemic for the modern separation of art and science.
Abstract: This essay presents a careful interpretation of Adorno’s classical text The Essay as Form, published in 1958 as the introduction to his Notes on Literature. Since it thickly condenses many of Adorno’s general views, the Essay poses great hermeneutic challenges to readers. The paper, first, elaborates on the essay more broadly as a genre and identifies a spectrum between science and art each individual essay draws from to forge its particular hybridity. Second, the example is discussed as an epistemologically potent trope oscillating between subsumption and singularity. This internal tension renders the example particularly qualified to serve as the conceptual basis on which interpretative themes in the essay can be discovered. Three lines of interpretation are suggested: (a) poetological for the essay/Essay’s definition, goal, and method; (b) critical/dialectical for its treatment of concepts and in relation to content; and (c) epistemic for the modern separation of art and science. The conclusion comes b...

TL;DR: There has been a much-discussed movement towards "big history" in recent years as discussed by the authors, which is concerned with the origins of humanity, the rise of cities and civilization, the great transformations of the Neolithic and Industrial Revolutions, rise of the West, the global impact of the European empires.
Abstract: There has been a much-discussed movement towards ‘Big History’ in recent years. Big History is concerned with the big questions – the origins of humanity, the rise of cities and civilization, the great transformations of the Neolithic and Industrial Revolutions, the rise of the West, the global impact of the European empires. Professional historians are sometimes suspicious of the movement, and it is probably unwise for junior scholars in search of tenure to engage in it. But there has been considerable support for it even from established historians, and certainly for people outside the discipline it spells a welcome return to concerns that were once common but have slowly disappeared beneath the weight of academic specialization. Among the things that have returned is the study of civilizations. This, once a principal concern of 19th-century thinkers, fell into disrepute in the 20th century. The heroic labours of Oswald Spengler and Arnold Toynbee notwithstanding, professional historians turned their backs on it, regarding it as amateurish and popularity-seeking, if not sensationalist. Social scientists too, despite the example of Max Weber, and the urging of such as Emile Durkheim and Marcel Mauss, also retreated, proclaiming that the concept of civilization was far too fuzzy and imprecise to be properly ‘operationalized’. Partly for political reasons – the revival of what seemed to many civilizational conflicts between the West and certain non-western traditions, particularly Islam – civilization returned as a subject of inquiry in the early 21st century. Many date its reappearance from the popularity of Samuel Huntington’s The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of the World Order (1996), which had an impact well beyond its US base. Since that time, a number of major studies and analyses have been published, with the
