Abstract: 1. The likelihood of a patient having tuberculosis is increasing. Tuberculosis crosses all levels of our society, but is not evenly distributed. 2. Tuberculosis is generally spread via airborne routes in "droplet nuclei." Rarely, transmission can occur by direct inoculation via skin puncture with a contaminated object. 3. Persons who have active disease may or may not be infectious, depending on many factors.

When women lead.

Abstract: In participative management, it is the leader's role to involve employees and to create situations that contribute to positive feelings among employees about work. These techniques are based on the premise that individuals perform best when they feel good about themselves and their work. Women are more likely than men to motivate employees to turn self-interest into the goals of the organization. "Feminine" management characteristics include encouraging participation, sharing power and information, promoting selfworth of others, and energizing others. The feminine leadership style is especially relevant to and useful in nursing because it is a high-stress occupation. An interactive approach provides the necessary support that employees and colleagues need to survive in high-stress environments.

Abstract: A fundamental part of self-awareness is understanding your disposition, or how you tend to perceive the world, behave, and respond to others. Personality: Personality is an important aspect of disposition. It forms from birth through young adulthood and represents tendencies that are not easily changed. Given that, knowing how your personality traits are similar to and different from those around you can help you more effectively communicate and interact with others. Leadership: Leadership traits, on the other hand, are based on skills and attitudes rather than temperament alone. Fire safety in the operating room.

Abstract: 1. A fire in the operating room can cause patient death, staff injuries, and costly equipment, facility, and legal damage for the hospital involved. 2. Taking precautions, both preoperatively and intraoperatively, can greatly reduce the risk of an OR fire. 3. The use of a flammability evaluation form--most appropriately filled out by an interdepartmental team consisting of nursing, surgery, and anesthesia department members--aids in the review and assessment of general fire risks and safety throughout the operating suite.
