TL;DR: A considerable portion of the paper describes and illustrates a method for expressing the criteria of distortionless transmission in terms of the steady-state characteristics of the system, and of the minimum frequency range required for transmission at a given speed of signaling.
Abstract: The most obvious method for determining the distortion of telegraph signals is to calculate the transients of the telegraph system. This method has been treated by various writers, and solutions are available for telegraph lines with simple terminal conditions. It is well known that the extension of the same methods to more complicated terminal conditions, which represent the usual terminal apparatus, leads to great difficulties. The present paper attacks the same problem from the alternative standpoint of the steady-state characteristics of the system. This method has the advantage over the method of transients that the complication of the circuit which results from the use of terminal apparatus does not complicate the calculations materially. This method of treatment necessitates expressing the criteria of distortionless transmission in terms of the steady-state characteristics. Accordingly, a considerable portion of the paper describes and illustrates a method for making this translation. A discussion is given of the minimum frequency range required for transmission at a given speed of signaling. In the case of carrier telegraphy, this discussion includes a comparison of single-sideband and double-sideband transmission. A number of incidental topics is also discussed.

TL;DR: Starting with the basic assumption of no saturation or hysteresis, and with distribution of armature phase m.
Abstract: Starting with the basic assumption of no saturation or hysteresis, and with distribution of armature phase m. m. f. effectively sinusoidal as far as regards phenomena dependent upon rotor position, general formulas are developed for current, voltage, power, and torque under steady and transient load conditions. Special detailed formulas are also developed which permit the determination of current and torque on three-phase short circuit, during starting, and when only small deviations from an average operating angle are involved. In addition, new and more accurate equivalent circuits are developed for synchronous and asynchronous machines operating in parallel, and the domain of validity of such circuits is established. Throughout, the treatment has been generalized to include salient poles and an arbitrary number of rotor circuits. The analysis is thus adapted to machines equipped with field pole collars, or with amortisseur windings of any arbitrary construction. It is proposed to continue the analysis in a subsequent paper.

TL;DR: It will be shown that several of the well-known theorems on impedance networks have roughly analogous theorem in relay circuits, including the delta-wye and star-mesh transformations, and the duality theorem.
Abstract: In the control and protective circuits of complex electrical systems it is frequently necessary to make intricate interconnections of relay contacts and switches Examples of these circuits occur in automatic telephone exchanges, industrial motor-control equipment, and in almost any circuits designed to perform complex operations automatically In this article a mathematical analysis of certain of the properties of such networks will be made Particular attention will be given to the problem of network synthesis Given certain characteristics, it is required to find a circuit incorporating these characteristics The solution of this type of problem is not unique and methods of finding those particular circuits requiring the least number of relay contacts and switch blades will be studied Methods will also be described for finding any number of circuits equivalent to a given circuit in all operating characteristics It will be shown that several of the well-known theorems on impedance networks have roughly analogous theorems in relay circuits Notable among these are the delta-wye (δ-Y) and star-mesh transformations, and the duality theorem

TL;DR: In this article, a general discussion of unsymmetrical systems of co-planar vectors leads to the conclusion that they may be represented by symmetric systems of the same number of vectors, the number of symmetrical systems required to define the given system being equal to its degrees of freedom.
Abstract: In the introduction a general discussion of unsymmetrical systems of co-planar vectors leads to the conclusion that they may be represented by symmetrical systems of the same number of vectors, the number of symmetrical systems required to define the given system being equal to its degrees of freedom. A few trigonometrical theorems which are to be used in the paper are called to mind. The paper is subdivided into three parts, an abstract of which follows. It is recommended that only that part of Part I up to formula (33) and the portion dealing with star-delta transformations be read before proceeding with Part II. Part I deals with the resolution of unsymmetrical groups of numbers into symmetrical groups. These numbers may represent rotating vectors of systems of operators. A new operator termed the sequence operator is introduced which simplifies the manipulation. Formulas are derived for three-phase circuits. Star-delta transformations for symmetrical co-ordinates are given and expressions for power deduced. A short discussion of harmonics in three-phase systems is given. Part II deals with the practical application of this method to symmetrical rotating machines operating on unsymmetrical circuits. General formulas are derived and such special cases, as the single-phase induction motor, synchronous motor-generator, phase converters of various types, are discussed.
