TL;DR: Proximate composition was determined in different body parts (skin, white muscle, red muscle, head muscle and belly flap) of five species of tuna obtained from the Negambo fish landing site.
Abstract: Proximate composition was determined in different body parts (skin, white muscle, red muscle, head muscle and belly flap of five species of tuna; Katsuvonus pelamis (skipjack, balaya), Thunnus Albacares (yellow fin tuna, kellawalla), Auxis rochei (Bullet tuna, ragoduwa), Auxis thazard (frigate tuna, alagoduwa) and Euthvnnus affinis (kawakawa, attawalla) obtained from the Negambo fish landing site. Fatty acid profiles were also analyzed in the akin, red and white muscle of the five species. No significant differences between the tuna species were observed with respect to protein, total fat. and moisture contents. The ash content in Frigate tuna and Kawakawa were significantly higher than the other species. The muscle tissue in all the species was rich in protein (20-25%) and low in fat (

TL;DR: Kohila rhizome can be considered as a valuable functional food from the viewpoint of its antioxidant and dietary fibre content.
Abstract: Lasia spinosa (local name - kohila) is a stout, marshy plant with a creeping spiny rhizome. The tender leaves and rhizomes are used as a vegetable and are recommended for a variety of diseases in Ayurvedic medicine. The present study was carried out to determine the total antioxidant activity of Lasia spinosa rhizome and the contribution to antioxidant activity from the polyphenol fraction and ascorbic acid and the dietary fiber content (insoluble & soluble). Rhizomes 01=6) of Lasia spinosa were collected from six different markets in the locality near the university. According to the results obtained from the study, Lasia rhizome possessed a wide-ranging antioxidant capacity. A total antioxidant activity of 145.0 - 957.0 |^mol/g TEAC on a wet weight basis was observed. The contribution from polyphenols to the antioxidant activity ranged from 14% - 48%. In addition to polyphenols, ascorbic acid also contributes to the total antioxidant activity (34% - 56%). The rhizome is a rich source of dietary fiber with 40% - 75% of total dietary fiber on dry weight basis, (7.2% - 7.5% on fresh weight basis) constituting 35% - 60% and 4% - 18% of insoluble and soluble fiber respectively. The above antioxidants could act independently or synergistically with fiber, since Lasia spinosa is a rich source of dietary fiber to reduce the adverse effects of various diseases. Thus kohila rhizome can be considered as a valuable functional food from the viewpoint of its antioxidant and dietary fibre content. Key words : Lasia spinosa, antioxidant activity, polyphenols, ascorbic acid, dietary fiber Vidyodaya J. of Sci.. (2009) Vol. 14, pp 59-64

TL;DR: In this paper, Vidyodaya et al. proposed a new point estimator based on an approximation that they derived for the median of a gamma distribution and compared the new estimator with two conventional estimators, namely the sample median and the maximum likelihood estimator (mle).
Abstract: In this paper, we consider the problem of estimating the median of a gamma distribution. We introduce a new point estimator based on an approximation that we derive for the median of a gamma distribution. We compare the new estimator with two conventional estimators, namely the sample median and the maximum likelihood estimator (mle). Comparison is based on the amount of computations required to calculate the estimates and the root mean square errors of the estimators. The new estimator is shown to be 'optimum' with respect to these two criteria. Keywords and phrases: gamma distribution, median, point estimate, maximum likelihood estimate, moment estimate. TL;DR: It was found that the narrow variety of Halodule uninervis covered 75% of the potential areas of the lagoon and it was observed that Enhalus acroides, Cymodoceaserrulata and Thalassia hemprichii play a major role as substrata lor manyimportant epiphytic forms of macro and micro algae.
Abstract: The species composition, abundance and the distribution of different seagrassbeds of Puttalam lagoon have been investigated. Eight species belonging to sixgenera were recorded during the investigation i.e., Enhalus acroida (I. F..)RoyleThalassia hemprichif (Ehrenb.) Aschers., HaIodule uninervis (Forsk.) Aschers inBossiser, Syringodium isoetifolium (Aschers.) Dandy, Cymodocea rotundataEhernb. et Hempr. ex Aschers., Cymodocea serrulata(R. Br.) Aschers, and Magnus,Halophila ovalis (R. Br.) Hook. F. and Halophila decipiens Ostenfeld. Twovarieties of Halodule uninervis (narrow and wide) were also recorded during thisinvestigation. The distribution pattern of the different species of seagrass bedsshowed a close association with different salinity values of the lagoon. It wasfound that the narrow variety of Halodule uninervis covered 75% of the potentialareas of the lagoon. It was also observed that Enhalus acroides, Cymodoceaserrulata and Thalassia hemprichii play a major role as substrata lor manyimportant epiphytic forms of macro and micro algae. It was also discussed thaitraditionalfishing methods prevailing in this lagoon show til great threat to the'survival of the seagrass communities.'

TL;DR: It became evident that the crabs feed continuously during the night and only at the high tide in the daytime, and there is no seasonal variation in the food items.
Abstract: The Mud crab, Scylla serrata is an economically important crustaceaninhabiting the lagoons of the west coast of Sri Lanka Currently there is interestin mass rearing of the species in ponds Thus, a study was carried out to identifythe food and feeding habits of Seylla serrata in the Negombo Lagoon Thestomach contents of crabs of different sizes caught by unbaited gears were screenedto identify the food constituents and it wasfound that crabs of medium size (subadults)mainly fed on molluscs and the small ones (juveniles) on crustaceansMonthly samples were also studied and found that there is no seasonal variationin the food items Diurnal studies were carried out to determine the feeding timeand it became evident that the crabs feed continuously during the night andonly at the high tide in the daytime
