Abstract: The article deals with the question how new practice theories could provide the Social Studies of Childhood with more advanced theoretical and analytical perspectives In the first section, the theoretical references on the agency concept in Childhood Studies are taken under revision These have conceptualized agency up to now mainly oriented towards classical theories of action and the dualism of structure and agency In contrast to this classical conception, the relation between sociality, agency and actors as conceived in practice theories is presented in the main section in three consecutive steps: 1 The corporeality and material-mental structure of practices is reflected; 2 the role of artefacts in the structuration and reproduction of practices is discussed; 3 the practice-theoretical change of perspective from intentionally acting human actors to multiple participants of practice and to agency as an effect of practices is pointed out In the concluding part, the challenges of these practice theoretical reflections to Childhood Studies are elaborated: Insofar as agency is not only conceptualized as an incorporated (and to be biographically incorporated) characteristic of children as persons but also as an effect of practices, it is more understood as depending on situations and more variable, context sensitive and complex as in the Childhood Studies so far Practice theories thereby open up differentiated heuristic perspectives for Childhood Studies In return, Childhood Studies also challenge practice theory in its adult-centrism

Bildung und Armut: Der Beitrag des Bildungssystems zur Vererbung und zur Bekämpfung von Armut

Abstract: Zu Beginn des Beitrags wird die Armutsfalle beschrieben, dann die verschiedenen Facetten der Kinderarmut bestimmt: zunachst Einkommensarmut als okonomische, sodann Zertifikatsarmut und Kompetenzarmut als funktionale Aspekte der Bildungsarmut. Ein weiterer Abschnitt beschreibt den Beitrag des mehrgliedrigen Schulsystems, seiner soziokulturellen Segregationsleistung und seiner vor allem zeitlichen Operationsweise zur Reproduktion und intergenerationellen Vererbung der Armut. Im letzten Teil werden padagogische Strategien fur eine entwicklungs- und kompetenzorientierte Uberwindung von Bildungsarmut skizziert. (DIPF/Orig.) The paper starts with a description of the poverty trap, followed by attempts to define the various facets of child poverty. The concept of income poverty targets the economic aspects, failure to earn credits and deprivation of competency target functional aspects of educational deprivation. The subsequent sections of the paper describe the contribution of the tracking system, of the sociocultural segregation it serves, and of the modalities of the school system 's use of time to the intergenerational reproduction of poverty. The final part of the paper outlines strategies of developmentally activating and competence-oriented teaching as a means towards overcoming educational deprivation in schools. (DIPF/Orig.)

Der Zusammenhang von familärer Lernumwelt mit schulrelevanten Kompetenzen im Vorschulalter

Abstract: Die familiare Lernumwelt (auch "Home Literacy Environment" genannt, kurz HLE) und ihre Bedeutung fur die Entwicklung kindlicher Kompetenzen wurde in Deutschland bislang nur wenig untersucht und in empirischen Studien berucksichtigt. Die vorliegende Untersuchung analysiert deshalb die Bedeutung von HLE fur schriftsprachliche Vorlauferfertigkeiten und sprachliche Fahigkeiten sowie fur mathematische Vorlauferkompetenzen an einer deutschen Stichprobe von etwa 400 Kindern im Alter von durchschnittlich 4,10 Jahren. Es zeigten sich signifikante Zusammenhange von HLE mit allen Leistungsmasen, den kognitiven Fahigkeiten sowie dem soziookonomischen Status der Familie (SOS) und dem Migrationshintergrund. Mittels Regressionsanalysen konnte festgestellt werden, dass HLE uber das Alter und die kognitiven Fahigkeiten der Kinder sowie uber den SOS hinaus zusatzlich signifikante und bedeutsame Varianzaufklarung von bis zu 20% leistet. Bei Berucksichtigung des Migrationshintergrunds blieb die zusatzliche Varianzaufklarung durch HLE immer noch signifikant, reduzierte sich aber deutlich. In einem Pfadmodell wurde die Rolle von HLE als Mediator zwischen SOS und Migrationshintergrund einerseits und den erhobenen Leistungsmasen andererseits bestatigt. Einschrankungen und Implikationen der Befunde werden diskutiert.
