Abstract: This very up-to-date and practical book, written by engineers working closely in 3GPP, gives insight into the newest technologies and standards adopted by 3GPP, with detailed explanations of the specific solutions chosen and their implementation in HSPA and LTE. The key technologies presented include multi-carrier transmission, advanced single-carrier transmission, advanced receivers, OFDM, MIMO and adaptive antenna solutions, advanced radio resource management and protocols, and different radio network architectures. Their role and use in the context of mobile broadband access in general is explained. Both a high-level overview and more detailed step-by-step explanations of HSPA and LTE implementation are given. An overview of other related systems such as TD SCDMA, CDMA2000, and WIMAX is also provided.This is a 'must-have' resource for engineers and other professionals working with cellular or wireless broadband technologies who need to know how to utilize the new technology to stay ahead of the competition.The authors of the book all work at Ericsson Research and are deeply involved in 3G development and standardisation since the early days of 3G research. The method of transmitting data by a user equipment in uplink includes receiving an uplink (UP) Grant signal from a base station on a specific message, determining whether there is data stored in a message 3 (Msg3) buffer when receiving the UL Grant signal on the specific message, determining whether the specific message is a random access response message, and transmitting the data stored in the Msg3 buffer to the base station using the UL Grant signal received on the specific message, if there is data stored in the Msg3 buffer when receiving the UL Grant signal on the specific message and the specific message is the random access response message.

Abstract: Femtocell access points (FAPs), also popularly known as Home Base Stations, are small base stations for use within indoor environments to improve coverage and capacity. FAPs have a limited range (e.g. limited to a home or office area) but offer immense capacity improvements for the network due to the ability to reuse a frequency more often as a result of smaller coverage areas. Because there may be thousands of these devices and since the nature of deployment is adhoc, it may not be possible to carry out elaborate frequency planning like that in the traditional cellular network. This paper aims to outline the radio resource management considerations within the context of femto cells, the broader objective being to initiate a discussion and encourage research in the areas highlighted.

Abstract: A random access procedure between a mobile terminal and a network is performed based upon the characteristics of a RACH preamble. If the RACH preamble was explicitly signaled by the network, a downlink channel is monitored until a new transmission is indicated according to radio resource allocation information received from the network. If the RACH preamble was not explicitly signaled by the network, a contention resolution timer is started and the downlink channel is monitored until the contention resolution timer expires. Such monitoring of downlink channels in a more efficient manner, results in effective reduction in power consumption.

Abstract: We propose a network architecture that enables spectrum sharing between a primary TV broadcast system and a secondary cellular broadband system. To compensate for the interference caused by overlay transmissions, the cognitive cellular base station cooperates with the TV system. We base our encoding approach on prior theoretical results and demonstrate how the cognition can be enabled in the TV spectrum. We show the performance gains of the proposed overlay approach for both the downlink and uplink of the cellular system. While the proposed approach requires that a cellular base station spends a part of its power to cooperate with the TV system, at the same time, it opens up frequency bands with favorable propagation properties, otherwise unavailable to cellular systems. This approach can thus bring benefits to both cellular and TV network operators in terms of performance and increased capacity.

Abstract: The last ten years have witnessed explosive growth in the number of subscribers for mobile telephony. The technology has evolved from early voice only services to today's mobile wireless broadband (Internet) data delivery. The increasing use of wireless connectivity via smartphones and laptops has led to an exponential surge in network traffic. Meeting traffic demands will cause a significant increase in operator energy cost as an enlarged network of radio base stations will be needed to support mobile broadband effectively and maintain operational competitiveness. This article explores approaches that will assist in delivering significant energy efficiency gains in future wireless networks, easing the burden on network operators. It investigates three approaches to saving energy in future wireless networks. These include sleep mode techniques to switch off radio transmissions whenever possible; femtocell and relay deployments; and multiple antenna wireless systems. The impact of these approaches on achieving energy-efficient wireless communication systems is discussed.
