Abstract: This very up-to-date and practical book, written by engineers working closely in 3GPP, gives insight into the newest technologies and standards adopted by 3GPP, with detailed explanations of the specific solutions chosen and their implementation in HSPA and LTE. The key technologies presented include multi-carrier transmission, advanced single-carrier transmission, advanced receivers, OFDM, MIMO and adaptive antenna solutions, advanced radio resource management and protocols, and different radio network architectures. Their role and use in the context of mobile broadband access in general is explained. Both a high-level overview and more detailed step-by-step explanations of HSPA and LTE implementation are given. An overview of other related systems such as TD SCDMA, CDMA2000, and WIMAX is also provided.This is a 'must-have' resource for engineers and other professionals working with cellular or wireless broadband technologies who need to know how to utilize the new technology to stay ahead of the competition.The authors of the book all work at Ericsson Research and are deeply involved in 3G development and standardisation since the early days of 3G research. Abstract: Conventional cellular wireless networks were designed with the purpose of providing high throughput for the user and high capacity for the service provider, without any provisions of energy efficiency. As a result, these networks have an enormous Carbon footprint. In this paper, we describe the sources of the inefficiencies in such networks. First, we present results of the studies on how much Carbon footprint such networks generate. We also discuss how much more mobile traffic is expected to increase so that this Carbon footprint will even increase tremendously more. We then discuss specific sources of inefficiency and potential sources of improvement at the physical layer, as well as at higher layers of the communication protocol hierarchy. In particular, considering that most of the energy inefficiency in cellular wireless networks is at the base stations, we discuss multi-tier networks and point to the potential of exploiting mobility patterns in order to use base station energy judiciously. We then investigate potential methods to reduce this inefficiency and quantify their individual contributions. By a consideration of the combination of all potential gains, we conclude that an improvement in energy consumption in cellular wireless networks by two orders of magnitude, or even more, is possible.

Abstract: TDD (Time Division Duplex) is one of the two duplex modes. TD-SCDMA (Time Division Synchronous CDMA) is the first TDD-based cellular mobile system which is commercialized in wide area and large scale and TD-SCDMA is also the first cellular mobile system which adopted smart antenna technology (also called as beamforming). As the long term evolution of TD-SCDMA, TD-LTE(A) (Time Division-Long Term Evolution, and TD-LTE Advanced) introduced OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and enhanced smart antenna technology together with MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output), which are adopted by LTE FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) either. It is indicated that TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE(A) have opened a sustainable utilization era of TDD and smart antenna technologies in the wireless mobile communication. This paper aims to present a systematic introduction to TDD-based mobile communications from TD-SCDMA to TD-LTE and beyond, with particular focuses on TDD key technologies, principles of TDD cellular mobile systems, TDD evolution path, and future TDD 5G directions. The comparisons between TDD and FDD are also included. We hope that this paper will provide a comprehensive overview of TDD technology upgrade and its standard evolution, and serve as a valuable reference for research on 5G mobile communication systems. It is believed that TDD will play more important role in 5G.

Abstract: We present a fast algorithm that, for a given input sequence and a linear channel code, computes the syndrome posterior probability (SPP) of the code, i.e., the probability that all parity check relations of the code are satisfied. According to this algorithm, the SPP can be computed blindly, i.e., given the soft information on a received sequence we can compute the SPP for the code without first decoding the bits. We show that the proposed scheme is efficient by investigating its computational complexity. We then consider two scenarios where our proposed SPP algorithm can be used. The first scenario is when we are interested in finding out whether a certain code was used to encode a data stream. We formulate a statistical hypothesis test and we investigate its performance. We also compare the performance of our scheme with that of an existing scheme. The second scenario deals with how we can use the algorithm for reducing the computational complexity of a blind decoding process. We propose a heuristic sequential statistical hypotheses test to use the fact that in real applications, the data arrives sequentially, and we investigate its performance using system simulations.

Abstract: In this paper we focus on LTE-Advanced with backward compatibility, which serves a mixture of LTE-Advanced and LTE-Rel'8 users. Aggregation of multiple component carriers (CCs) to form a wide spectrum is assumed in order to fulfill the bandwidth requirement for the next generation systems, thereby leading to a multi-carrier system. Although a LTE-Advanced user can simultaneously access all the CCs, a LTE-Rel'8 user is restricted to operate on a single CC at a time. Different methods for balancing the load across these CCs will affect the system performance. This is investigated through both analytical methods and system level simulations. Bearing in mind that the LTE-Advanced users are scheduled on more CCs than the LTE-Rel'8 users, we propose a simple cross CC packet scheduling algorithm that improves the resource allocation fairness among the two categories of users. This simple scheduling algorithm is shown to be effective in providing better coverage performance with no loss of the overall cell throughput, as compared to independent scheduling per CC.
